Medical Assistant III General Surgery
About the Role
Under the direction of management and physician leadership, performs and oversees functions related to clinical activities in Corewell Health's outpatient clinics. This includes maintaining patient flow, assisting in the delivery of primary and preventative health care, performing technical procedures, lab protocols, and clinically oriented activities under physician/provider direction. The Medical Assistant III supports physicians, clinic staff, and management to ensure efficient operations and customer satisfaction.
Acts as an assistant to the physician/provider by providing primary healthcare and patient care management. Collaborates with clerical staff to optimize operations and patient flow, interacts with outside healthcare facilities and agencies, and maintains updated competencies.
Performs front office duties to provide coverage as needed and may be required to provide coverage in other departments or locations. Demonstrates excellent customer service skills and supports patient and family-centered care.
Performs and is formally assigned at least two additional responsibilities, constituting 20% or more of dedicated time, such as:
- Primary care gaps in care identification, outreach, and chart preparation
- Residency clinic role
- High-level disinfection
- Designated new hire preceptor
- Role in practice participating in or leading special programs/grants (e.g., CPC Plus, SIM, Vaccine for Child Program, process improvement, service excellence ambassador)
- Care management (PDCMs)
- Qualified language interpreter
- Super User for EPIC or specific competency
- Advanced provider support – assisting with complex procedures and/or infusion/chemo scheduling
- Multi-site/flexible float pool assignment
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Completion of a competency-based accredited MA program, including a clinical rotation, or equivalent experience
- 1 year (12 months) of MA experience; or completed CH MA internship and 6 months of MA experience; or completed CH MA apprenticeship program
- 2 years of MA experience (preferred)
Qualifications
- CRT-Basic Life Support (BLS) - AHA American Heart Association (within 30 days from hire) or CRT-Basic Life Support (BLS) - ARC American Red Cross (within 30 days from hire)
- One of the following certifications within 90 days:
- CRT-Medical Assistant, Certified (CMA) - AAMA American Association of Medical Assistants
- CRT-Medical Assistant, Registered (RMA) - AMT American Medical Technologists
- CRT-Medical Assistant, American Registry (ARMA) - ARMA American Medical Technologists
- CRT-Medical Assistant, Certified (NCMA) - NCCT National Center for Competency Testing
- CRT-Medical Assistant, Certified (CCMA) - NHA National HealthCareer Association
- CRT-Medical Assistant, Certified (NRCMA) - NAHP National Association for Health Professionals
- LIC-License Practical Nursing (LPN) - State of Michigan (upon hire)
