About the role
The role supports healthcare teams by assisting with both clinical and non-clinical patient services under the direction of healthcare providers. Key responsibilities include taking vital signs, documenting patient information, scheduling appointments, and managing patient flow. This role involves direct interaction with patients to ensure their comfort and address concerns, as well as collaboration with physicians, nurse practitioners, and nursing staff to facilitate efficient care.
Responsibilities
- Takes vital signs, documents patient information, schedules appointments, and manages patient flow.
- Interviews patients to obtain medical information, measures vital signs, weight, and height, and records information in the patient's medical record.
- Explains treatment procedures, medications, diets, and physician instructions to patients, ordering and organizing educational materials to reinforce patient education.
- Performs general office duties, such as answering phones, taking dictation, and completing insurance forms, while acting as a liaison with other departments and advocating for patients with a positive customer service approach.
- Collects blood, tissue, or other laboratory specimens, logs them, and prepares them for testing; performs phlebotomy if competence is demonstrated.
- Maintains inventory of immunizations and checks expiration dates.
- Provides immunizations (as applicable) which requires certification or 3 years of experience administering a vaccine and supervision of a provider.
- Improves appropriate departmental quality initiatives, such as two patient identifiers and hand hygiene.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or Equivalent required or Certificate in Medical Assisting preferred.
- Direct MA experience or medical field work 1-2 years required.
- Basic Life Support [BLS Certification] - Data Conversion - Various Issuers preferred.
- Certified Medical Assistant [National Certification] - Data Conversion - Various Issuers preferred.
- Knowledge, skills, and abilities: strong interpersonal and communication skills, ability to prioritize tasks, accuracy and attention to detail, compliance with privacy and confidentiality rules, ability to take vital signs and manual blood pressure, collect blood samples and other specimens, comprehensive knowledge of medical terminology, procedures, and protocols, proficiency in electronic health record (EHR) systems and medical office software, using logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses, managing time and others.
