Medical Assistant II - Orthopedics

About the role

Nemours Children's Health in Pensacola, FL is seeking a Medical Assistant (MA) for our outpatient pediatric specialty care office. The Medical Assistant - Orthopedics serves as an important liaison between the patient/family, provider, and other care team members. Responsibilities include coordinating patient flow, assisting in clinical data collection and review for intake, ensuring relevant information is available to the provider, and entering pertinent history into the medical record. The MA performs and assists with clinical procedures in accordance with divisional/department responsibilities as directed by the provider and per protocol.

Responsibilities

• Greets patients and families at the clinical setting according to Nemours Standards of Behavior.
• Verifies patient identity using two patient identifiers (name and date of birth).
• Prepares exam rooms, clinic equipment, and computer technology by maintaining inventory and supplies for the outpatient visit.
• Rooms patient ensuring appropriate documents are with the patient, including required diagnostic reports.
• Receives, unpacks, stores, inventories, and transports non-controlled medications and clinic supplies.
• Performs clinical duties to support the outpatient visit, including:
  • Obtaining and documenting height, weight, head circumference, and vital signs.
  • Documenting reason for visit, chief complaint, and initiating orders defined using smart sets as appropriate for scope of service and Nemours’ protocol.
  • Assisting with patient examination/treatment.
  • Performing and documenting point of care testing and controls.
  • Administering and documenting vaccines and approved medications as defined by policy, and providing vaccine records to families.
  • Performing and collecting routine laboratory specimens.
  • Operating required medical equipment.
• Assists in the flow of patient care and acts as a liaison between support services, other clinical divisions, and patients regarding care and status of wait times.
• Makes confirmation calls that are not completed by automated systems to ensure all visits are in “confirmed” status prior to visit or per Department protocol.

Qualifications

• Experience as a Medical Assistant strongly preferred.
• Successful completion of a Medical Assistant program preferred.
• Orthopedic experience a plus.
• Medical Assistant Certification preferred: acceptable certifications are Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), Registered Medical Assistant (RMA), National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA), and Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA).
• BLS certification with the American Heart Association must be obtained within 90 days of start date.
