About the Role

The Medical Assistant in the Laboratory obtains and processes specimens under the clinical direction of the Physician Lab Director, the Medical Technologist, and the Director of Nursing Services. Responsibilities include documenting all activities, monitoring supplies, and maintaining compliance with all regulatory and accreditation requirements related to safety and lab testing.

Reports to: Clinic Administrator or designee (Direct & Administrative); Physician Lab Director / Medical Technologist / Director of Nursing Services (Technical/Clinical).

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) Certificate is preferred.
  • Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program and possession of a current Medical Assistant (MA) certificate. The program must be a secondary or postsecondary Medical Assistant education program from a public school authorized by the Department of Education, or an approved Medical Assistant program at a postsecondary institution accredited or approved by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education.
  • Verification of completion of required hours in an approved Medical Assistant training program to perform venipuncture.
  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician I (CPT-I) certification is a plus but not mandatory.
  • Current Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification, in compliance with corporate CPR Policy.
  • Must be deemed competent to perform Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) Waived point-of-care testing by completing the Lab Competency Tool Part 1 and Written Exam Part 1 within 90 days of employment.
  • Must be deemed competent to perform venipuncture and collect/process specimens to be sent out to reference laboratories using the Lab Skills Competency Tool Part 2 within 90 days of employment.
  • Demonstrate skills in the performance of specimen receiving, centrifuging, labeling, logging, sorting, and racking.
  • Proficiency with the electronic health record database within three months of attending training session(s).
  • Ability to effectively attend to patients of various age groups, including infants, adults, and individuals with disabilities.
  • Fluency in English (speaks, reads, and writes).
  • Fluency in Spanish (speaks, translates, reads, and writes) and completion of the mandatory Medical Interpretation course offered at NEVHC.
  • Ability to maintain absolute confidentiality about health care and other patient/client information.
  • Professional demeanor at all times.
  • Current California driver’s license, appropriate insurance coverage, and a driving record acceptable to NEVHC’s insurance carrier (if required to drive on the job).
