About the role

This position is responsible for preparing and rooming patients for exams, performing laboratory procedures, assisting with procedures, administering medications, and communicating with healthcare team members. The role also involves following through with necessary procedure requests and referrals.

Responsibilities

  • Obtains vital signs and gathers/presents pertinent health information.
  • Maintains Clinical Integration/Quality Improvement measures and notifies clinicians.
  • Performs laboratory procedures using aseptic techniques and infection control guidelines.
  • Aids in procedures such as pelvic exams, allergy tests, EMG, cautery, colposcopy, etc.
  • Administers routine medications under physician/approved protocols.
  • Follows through with procedure/test requests, appointments, and referrals.
  • Communicates with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare team members to ensure smooth clinic flow.
  • Communicates accurately and promptly with patients.
  • Performs basic and advanced clinical support tasks based on specialty and competencies.

Requirements

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association within 45 days.
  • GED or high school diploma.
  • Completion of an accredited or approved Medical Assistant program or 2 years of full-time experience as a Medical Assistant within the last 5 years.
  • Knowledge of growth and development across the lifespan.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in keyboarding, Windows operating system, and electronic medical records systems.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance.
  • Ability to lift heavier objects with assistance and use patient handling equipment.
  • Functional vision, hearing, and touch.
  • Ability to use fine-hand manipulation skills.

  • Age-specific information is developed further in departmental job standards.
  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills appropriate to the age of the patients served.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, crawl, kneel, climb, and reach above shoulders throughout the workday.
  • Ability to lift 35 pounds without assistance.
  • Use of patient handling equipment when lifting over 35 pounds or when patient cannot assist with lift.
  • Exposure to mechanical, electrical, chemical, blood and body fluids.
  • Required to wear protective clothing and equipment as needed.
  • Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
