About the role
The Medical Assistant I is an unlicensed health professional who assists patients throughout their routine visits and helps manage their health. They work collaboratively with medical providers and other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive health care services.
Responsibilities
- Works closely with medical providers to provide comprehensive health care to patients
- Prepares for the patient visit in advance to ensure all necessary lab results, diagnostics, and summaries are ready
- Aids in the provision of clinical services such as taking vital signs, performing EKGs, administering vaccines, and collecting and preparing specimens
- Operates various medical equipment and ensures accurate and timely documentation for all encounters
- Adheres to vaccine funding sources and protocols
- Measures and interprets TB skin test reactions, and refers to RN or medical provider for interpretation
- Ensures exam rooms are prepared and sterilized before and after each patient
- Aids in physical examinations, treatments, and procedures as needed
- Completes forms required for different programs and assists with patient education
- Makes appropriate referrals to other departments and outside agencies
- Assists patients with ambulation and transfers, including wheelchair and stretcher transfers
- Tracks and follows up on patients with continuing health care needs
- Rotates to other clinic sites or medical departments as required
- Maintains refrigerators and freezers at proper temperatures
- Assists with interpreter needs for patients
- Participates in achieving organizational goals and completes mandatory training sessions
- Responds to patient portal messages and reports incidents promptly
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Medical Assistant certificate from an accredited school
- Completion of 160 hours of externship or 1 year of work experience as a Medical Assistant
- Nevada-only Laboratory License
- Basic Life Support certification
- Proficiency in computer usage, including Microsoft Office and EMR (EPIC preferred)
- Fluency in English, Chinese, or Spanish; other languages are an asset
Qualifications
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- Knowledge of basic computer skills
- Ability to type at least 35 words per minute
