Medical Assistant I - Atrium Health Rutherford IM FT

About the Role

This is a part-time, PRN position with a schedule of Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM. The role is not benefits-eligible.

Responsibilities

• Adhere to Medical Assistant scope of practice, follow all policies and procedures, and maintain training and competency based on area of specialty when providing patient care.
• Perform rooming/visit tasks such as vital signs, medication reconciliation, medical history, health maintenance, allergy review, and screenings (depression, suicide, falls, social drivers of health, etc.).
• Assist provider with or perform procedures as ordered.
• Perform lab-related duties such as venipuncture, specimen collection/labeling/packing, preparation of lab orders/requisitions, and results tracking. Conduct Point of Care testing (POCT) per standing order/provider order.
• Complete Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) approved waived laboratory tests and practice-specific diagnostic testing in adherence to CLIA standards.
• Administer medications and vaccines safely following the rights of medication administration.
• Perform other duties as assigned, such as medication refills, insurance authorizations, safety/regulatory log completion, patient messaging, medication/supply ordering, appointment scheduling, and referrals.
• Demonstrate effective and timely communication, teamwork, and appropriate escalation.
• Maintain a clean work environment, ensuring instruments and equipment are cleaned appropriately. Ensure equipment and supplies are in working order and areas are appropriately stocked.
• May assist with training and onboarding of other teammates.
• May serve as a role champion or on a committee.
• Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served, including principles of growth and development over the life span.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program or structured military training that is clinical in nature (per DD214) in lieu of a formal medical assistant program or EMT. Specific requirements vary by location:
  • Greater Charlotte/Wake Forest: Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program or structured military training (clinical in nature per DD214) in lieu of a formal program or EMT.
  • IL/WI Divisions/Floyd & Navicent: Completion of an accredited or approved Medical Assistant program, or 2 years of verifiable full-time experience as a Medical Assistant within the last 5 years.
• Certification/License:
  • Greater Charlotte: Current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS certification. Recognized or certified as a CMA or RMA by one of the following: AAMA, NHA, NHCWA, NCCT, ARMA, AMT, NAHP, or NRMA. Successful completion of Atrium Health’s competency assessment.
  • IL/WI Divisions/Floyd & Navicent: BLS for Healthcare Providers certification (AHA) within 45 days unless waived. Certified or registered as a CMA or RMA by AAMA, NHA (CCMA), AMT (RMA), NCCT (NCMA), CMAC, or AMCA.
  • Wake Forest: Current AHA BLS certification. Certification by AAMA, AMT, AAH, NHCWA, NHA, MCMA, NAHP, or NRMA. PEARS certification may be required within 1 year in select areas. Successful completion of Atrium Health’s competency assessment. Professional practice advancement through governance, safety coaching, super-user roles, or certifications (SPICE, OSHA/IP).
• Two years of experience in a clinical practice setting as a Medical Assistant.

Skills

• Ability to perform routine and complex technical skills within the Medical Assistant scope of practice after demonstrated competency.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to develop rapport and maintain positive, professional relationships with patients, team members, and physicians.
• Proficient computer skills, including keyboarding, navigation within a Windows operating system, and use of electronic mail and electronic medical records systems.
• Customer service skills that support a positive patient experience.

Physical Requirements

• Must sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, crawl, kneel, climb, and reach above shoulders throughout the workday.
• Ability to lift 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts over 35 pounds or when the patient cannot assist, use patient handling equipment with at least one other team member when available.
• Functional speech, vision, hearing, and touch with fine-hand manipulation skills.
• Exposure to mechanical, electrical, chemical hazards, and blood/body fluids. Required to wear protective clothing and equipment as needed.
• Operate all equipment necessary to perform the job.

Pay

The pay range for this position is $22.90 - $34.35 per hour.
