About the role
The Medical Assistant I position within the Health Center provides administrative and clinical support to the patient care team. This role serves as an entry-level position, with the potential to advance to a Medical Assistant II after six months of training.
Responsibilities
- Uses the practice management program to register, schedule, and verify appointments.
- Prepares for patient visits by reviewing the schedule and preparing necessary paperwork.
- Verifies patient insurance and collects co-payments.
- Greets patients and visitors, directs them to examination rooms, and collects lab results and paperwork.
- Prints labels, completes encounter forms, and charts notes.
- Schedules referral appointments and mails out results.
- Interviews patients, documents medical history, and obtains vital signs.
- Reports abnormal readings and follows universal precautions.
- Prepares and labels lab requisitions and specimens.
- Maintains confidentiality of patient information.
- Assists providers with exams and procedures, including visual exams, EKGs, and cleaning exam rooms.
- Administers medication through inhalation, ears, eyes, orally, and by injection.
- Performs subcutaneous and intramuscular immunizations.
- Performs in-house tests such as strep, BGL, hematocrit, chemstrip UA, HCG, hemoglobin A1C, and urine drug screens.
- Communicates effectively with patients and their families.
- Works on multiple tasks within established deadlines.
Requirements
- High School graduate or GED certificate.
- Graduation from a technical school as a Medical Assistant or equivalent.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) is preferred.
- CPR Certification must be obtained within the first 6 months of hire and maintained.
- Knowledge of patient interviewing techniques, basic medical terminology, vital signs, and abnormal values.
- Ability to take a blood pressure, obtain a pulse, respiratory rate, height, weight, temperature, and perform throat cultures.
- Knowledge of various instruments, their parts, and classifications, as well as procedures for care and sterilization of instruments.
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients and their families.
- Physical ability to lift and carry related to clinic duties.
- Computer skills to enter and access patient data.
- Visual acuity, hearing, and speaking abilities to read computer monitor output and results of basic medical tests.
