Medical Assistant / Health Care Assistant

About the Role

Under the supervision and direction of a registered nurse, performs a full range of duties as a Medical Assistant. Typical duties include rooming patients, obtaining basic treatment information, performing various screening tests, administering vaccinations, documenting patient information in the electronic medical record, performing lab work, and preparing supplies and equipment for patient exams including sterilization for minor surgical procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Assess patients in a time-efficient manner, obtaining and documenting accurate information, using appropriate forms, ensuring all necessary information is available for the provider.
  • Perform treatments and procedures requested by providers (e.g., EKG, dressing changes, immunizations) and document appropriately.
  • Assist providers with routine exams and minor surgeries.
  • Function as a primary care staff member in ordering supplies and restocking as needed.
  • Prepare exam or minor surgery rooms with correct equipment and supplies for provider utilization.
  • Assume responsibilities consistent with guidelines when assigned to different clinic areas.
  • Exhibit proper handling of blood and bodily fluids.
  • Provide high-quality health care to patients in other Olin clinics as needed.
  • Maintain Basic Life Support and Compliance certifications.
  • Assist in developing, monitoring, and implementing Quality Improvement Standards as they pertain to medical assisting.
  • Work as a team member, take direction from the RN, and support providers.
  • Maintain certification for Medical Assistant.

Requirements

  • Knowledge normally acquired through a high school education.
  • Six months to one year of related and progressively more responsible work experience in a medical office or clinical setting performing routine health assessment tests.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • May require experience in word processing and database software, specified medical courses (e.g., Nurse Health Aid, Phlebotomy), or Medical Billing and Medical Terminology experience.
  • May require knowledge of electronic medical record and patient scheduling systems.
  • Requires certification as a medical assistant.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Microsoft products, Outlook email and calendar functions, Athena EHR, and HIPAA/Fraud compliance.
  • Critical decision-making skills while under stress.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to interact with patients, physicians, and nursing staff.

Schedule

Standard 8 AM–5 PM, 11 months performing work and 1 month of unpaid leave annually.

Health Risks

This position works in a clinical setting, often within three feet of patients.
