Qualifications
- 1-2 years of experience in orthopedics, spine surgery, or pain management is preferred. In lieu of experience, must meet one of the following:
- Graduated from a formal training program during the last 12-18 months and hold a CMA certificate; or
- Grandfathered in as defined by State regulation (must pass the MA competency exam within the first six months of employment).
- Active Medical Assistant certification such as:
- Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) with current membership from American Medical Technologists (AMT); or
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) with current membership from American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA); or
- Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) with current membership from National Health Career Association (NHA) (test administered after 7/1/2017 only); or
- National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) with current membership from National Certified Competency Testing (NCCT); or
- Per State regulations.
- Experience with office medical procedures, treatments, insurance, managed care operations, EMR, and scheduling software.
- Certification or additional training must meet the requirements for meaningful use.
- BLS certification required.
- High school diploma/GED and graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant training program as defined by state regulations.
- Preferred: Two years of experience in an outpatient physical therapy clinic or experience with orthopedics.
Responsibilities
- Facilitates communication between the patient and the provider during patient care:
- Collect and share pertinent information with the provider.
- Receive and act on directives from the provider.
- Prepare patients for visits with the provider, including:
- Rooming patients, obtaining and documenting vitals.
- Reviewing intake paperwork, pulling up radiology images.
- Removing dressings, procedure set-up, injection prep, accurate data entry into EMR.
- Complete tasks associated with Company initiatives such as PROs, Quality Payment Programs, etc.
- Maintain exam room standards:
- Restock rooms at the end of each clinic day.
- Clean rooms and tables as needed during and at the end of each day.
- Monitor and replace biohazard and sharps containers as needed.
- Assist the provider in preparing patient prescriptions and completing medical and patient forms (e.g., work release, FMLA).
- Retrieve and respond to voicemails within 24 business hours and document actions in EMR.
- Prepare patient electronic charts for clinic visits before the date of service:
- Verify outstanding testing results are in EMR.
- Confirm patient appropriateness to the provider (body part and/or insurance).
- Note imaging, DME, or casting needed prior to the provider visit.
- Scan clinical documents into EMR.
- Print clinic schedules on the morning of the date of service.
- Ensure patients receive education as indicated by the provider.
- Manage EMR desktops of assigned providers in a timely manner.
- Act as PTO Buddy per clinic plan.
- Create and promote a positive patient experience.
- Maintain a HIPAA-compliant environment.
- Maintain a clean workspace.
