Responsibilities
- Assists the physician in assessing patient needs through history, observation, physical exam, telephone triage, and analysis of diagnostic results.
- Performs direct patient care, including triage, assessment, procedures, treatments, patient education, discharge, and follow-up instructions.
- Prepares patients to be seen by the provider, collects and documents vital signs, history, and chief complaint through communication with patients and family.
- Performs chart prep and scans necessary documents into the patient’s medical record.
- Performs specialized tests such as electrocardiography, pulmonary function tests, sleep studies, Holter monitors, and selected laboratory procedures as needed.
- Prepares and administers medications as ordered by the physician.
- Assists providers with treatments and procedures.
- Schedules testing and referral appointments for patients per provider instructions.
- Consults with patients via telephone, addressing concerns or referring calls to the physician as needed.
- Performs follow-up calls to patients.
- Cleans and straightens examination rooms between patients according to OSHA standards.
- Maintains cleanliness and availability of instruments in examination rooms.
- Sets up and maintains equipment; reports malfunctions to office management immediately.
- Maintains medical supply inventory, checks expiration dates on medications and vaccines, and disposes of outdated items.
- Develops and maintains working knowledge of all equipment required for duties.
- Schedules and reschedules patient appointments as necessary.
- Assists patients in signing up for MyChart and encourages its use as the primary communication tool with McLeod Health.
- Promotes a positive and learning-conducive climate by encouraging co-workers’ continuing education.
- Actively participates in departmental quality improvement projects.
- Promotes the practice’s mission and philosophy and projects a positive image.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) certification.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification must be obtained within 90 days of hire.
