Responsibilities

  • Assists clinicians and nursing staff in providing medical care and implementing and evaluating direct patient care.
  • Prepares patients for exam and treatment by taking and recording vital signs, symptoms, and other necessary measurements; records chief complaint and documents pain scores as appropriate.
  • Reports patient conditions that may indicate a change in status to the clinician.
  • Assists providers with exams and minor in-office procedures, including taking blood pressure, documenting respiration and heart rate/pulse, taking temperature, performing phlebotomies, ear irrigation, and EKGs.
  • Acts as chaperon as needed.
  • Uses universal blood and body fluid precautions and personal protective equipment as needed.
  • Prioritizes patient flow through the clinical process and coordinates patient care, including pre-certifications, referrals, authorizations, prescriptions, and scheduling for clinic, hospital, and ancillary medical treatments and tests.
  • Communicates test results to patients and acts as a resource to clinicians to provide optimal patient care.
  • May administer medications in accordance with established policies and procedures or as directed.
  • Provides clerical support with patient notifications and documentation, including complete medical records (labs, authorizations, X-rays, hospital records, and previous care).
  • Provides accurate information for billing related to the patient encounter in a timely fashion.
  • Maintains a clean, functional environment, including cleaning and disinfection of equipment, exam rooms, and storage areas; disinfects equipment and instruments using appropriate solutions and follows sterilization procedures.
  • Follows manufacturer's recommendations and OSHA guidelines in handling hazardous substances.
  • Performs basic maintenance of equipment and coordinates needed repairs.
  • Orders supplies as directed and stocks patient care areas.
  • Manages medication ordering and related tasks (e.g., expired medications/equipment and recalls).
  • Develops and maintains effective communication with internal and external customers.
  • Exemplifies service orientation and teamwork in all contacts.
  • Completes all necessary onboarding/orientation activities, including simulation training as needed or directed.
  • Works under the direct supervision of providers and interacts with staff, physicians, patients, families, and external contacts regarding patient care.
  • Prioritizes data from multiple sources to support patient and family responses to changes in health status.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge.
  • Completion of an approved medical assistant training program as defined by state regulations.
  • Active Medical Assistant Certification is required, meeting Meaningful Use requirements.
  • BLS certification required.
  • Active Medical Assistant certification such as:
    • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) with proof of current membership from American Medical Technologists (AMT)
    • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) with proof of current membership from American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
    • Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) with proof of current membership from National Health Career Association (NHA) (Test administered after 7/1/2017 only)
    • National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) with proof of current membership from National Certified Competency Testing (NCCT)
  • Strong computer skills, including the ability to work with medical software.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple changing priorities in an effective and organized fashion.
  • Employees working at Banner Behavioral Health Hospital, BTMC Behavioral, and BUMG, BUMCT, or BUMCS in a Behavioral Health clinical setting serving children must possess an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card at the time of hire and maintain it for the duration of employment. An Arizona Criminal History Affidavit must be signed upon hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with office medical procedures and treatments.
  • Knowledge of insurance, managed care operations, EMR, and scheduling software.
  • Additional related education and/or experience.
