Location: Chicago, Illinois – Rush University Medical Center, Family Medicine Clinic

About the role

The Medical Assistant supports Physicians, Mid-Level Practitioners, and Registered Nurses in an ambulatory care setting. Responsibilities include maintaining patient flow, preparing exam rooms, performing vital signs and point-of-care testing, and administering injections, immunizations, nebulizer treatments, and over-the-counter medications under physician direction.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate and maintain organized patient flow.
• Perform patient intake: vital signs, height, weight, reason for visit, interim history, allergies, medication lists, and other required interventions.
• Prepare patients for exams based on the reason for visit and assist providers with procedures.
• Review appointment schedules and ensure all patient charts are available for visits.
• Ensure all ancillary reports and required paperwork are available to the provider at the time of visit.
• Perform basic lab and testing procedures, including phlebotomy and EKGs.
• Administer immunizations, intramuscular or subcutaneous medications, and nebulizer treatments after competency verification.
• Perform Tuberculin skin testing as ordered by the Physician.
• Document administration of medications in Epic per policy or protocol.
• Clean, prepare, and stock exam rooms, treatment rooms, and workstations.
• Call patients regarding test results and medical instructions under physician direction.
• Call in medication refills under physician direction or protocol.
• Document patient care information in the outpatient medical record according to standards.
• Assist with scheduling patient tests, procedures, and follow-up appointments.
• Assist in the care, cleaning, and sterilization of equipment and instruments.
• Maintain inventory of medical and linen supplies.
• Maintain quality control for equipment.
• Provide cross-coverage to other clinical areas as assigned.
• Participate in quality improvement projects.
• Maintain compliance with The Joint Commission (TJC) standards and other regulatory bodies.
• Perform unit-specific duties as needed.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Clinical Medical Assistant Certification by AAMA, AMT, NCCT, NAHP, AAH, or NHA required upon hire (includes principles and techniques of injections and medication administration).
• Graduates of a Rush Medical Assistant Apprenticeship program must obtain Clinical Medical Assistant Certification within six months of hire.
• Current CPR certification required upon start date.
• Computer skills.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, customer service, and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• One year of clinical experience.
• Phlebotomy experience.
• Epic Ambulatory experience.

Pay

Pay range: $22.72 – $31.80 per hour. Rush salaries are determined by factors including education, job-related experience, skills, internal equity, and industry-specific market data. Offers may vary based on individual circumstances.

• Full-time (0.9 – 1.0 FTE).
• Shift 1: 8-hour shifts between 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM.
