Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Obtains and records patient medical histories, vitals, test results and other information for medical records while maintaining strict confidentiality.
- Schedules, patient check-in and check-out, and patient medical record maintenance.
- Prepares treatment rooms for clinical examinations and assists practitioners with medical procedures and other patient care.
- Ensures compliance with all health care regulations, including HIPAA and OSHA.
- Prepares and administers medications for patients as directed by physicians.
- Prepares and maintains medical and office supplies. Maintains and sterilizes medical instruments and equipment.
- Verifies patient information and updates records. Manages patient records and medical histories.
- Completes clinical documentation as required.
- Educates patients about medications, procedures, and follow-up care.
- Provides information and support to patients and their families.
- Delivers compassionate support, attention and assistance to patients and families
- Verifies patient’s insurance coverage and any referrals needed at each visit.
- Schedules patient appointments and completes reminder calls for upcoming appointments.
- Assists members, their family or legal representatives with clinical needs by phone or electronic means.
- Collaborates closely with psychiatrists to coordinate patient care.
- Assists members and pharmacies with questions about medications and/or prescriptions.
- Collaborates with ancillary services such as internal and external referrals, laboratory testing requests, acquisition of or sharing of medical records.
- Obtains and accurately enters vital signs into the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) as needed
- Prepares, submits and/or stores necessary documentation for clinical services (E.g.: consent forms, ability to pay, releases of information, recipient rights, grievance forms if needed).
- Attends to phone calls and handles correspondence pertaining to daily clinical operations.
- Prepares and maintains the reception area, exam rooms and interview rooms.
- Assists with medication refill requests by verifying their personal information, reviewing their clinical records, and confirming whether the request for refills is appropriate.
- Plan and coordinate injectable therapies as recommended by psychiatric providers and administer the injectable medications.
- Ensure the Medical Assistant office is always clean and welcoming. Clean and disinfect all medical equipment and work surfaces soiled by blood or body fluids.
- Assists with patient scheduling when needed. Answering phones and greeting patients. Assist in billing and insurance claims when needed.

- Knowledge of Federal policies, rules, regulations and procedures as it relates to DWIHN.
- Knowledge of patient care, medical terminology, and appropriate clinical pharmacology.
- Knowledge of electronic health record systems.

REQUIRED EDUCATION
- A High School Diploma or equivalent.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATION
- Certified Medical Assistant/Certified Clinical Medical Assistant
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience working in a medical setting.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
- Behavioral health experience preferred.
REQUIRED LICENSE(S)
- A valid State of Michigan Driver’s License with a safe and acceptable driving record.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Work is performed in an office/clinic setting.
