About the Role

The primary function of this position is to perform clinical and clerical duties in support of an assigned clinic, ensuring quality and efficient health care delivery to patients under the direction of licensed healthcare professionals. This role involves entering orders into the health record systems to meet Electronic Health Records (EHR) standards and objectives consistent with Meaningful Use core guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Order supplies, manage inventories, and stock/rotate supplies.
  • Clean rooms, furniture, and equipment according to clinic policies and disinfection/sterilization guidelines.
  • Room patients and prepare the clinic for visits by retrieving lab/test results.
  • After competency check-off, take vital signs (height, weight, blood pressure, pulse ox, temperature, head circumference) and enter into the electronic health record.
  • Set up procedure rooms and assist licensed providers with clinical procedures.
  • Perform in-clinic tests and procedures, including:
    • Standard vision and hearing tests (adults only).
    • Waived lab testing (e.g., urine, bilirubin, pregnancy, hemoccult, rapid strep, throat culture, accucheck).
    • Collect and prepare lab specimens (urine, sputum).
    • EKG, spirometry, pulse oximetry, peak flow, and nebulizer treatments.
    • Simple dressing changes and suture/staple removal (after inspection by a licensed professional).
    • Ear wash.
  • Perform urinary catheterizations on adult patients (age 18+).
  • Perform phlebotomy and TB skin testing (may not interpret results).
  • Administer single-dose injections per protocols approved by the department medical director.
  • Refill medications and enter/transmit new medications or dosage changes under a licensed provider’s supervision.
  • Notify patients of normal test results via standardized letters or phone calls, per HIPAA guidelines.
  • Give prevention reminders (e.g., eye/foot exams) and order labs/preventative studies under supervision.
  • Complete standardized patient communication templates (excluding medication authorization letters).
  • Educate patients about diagnoses/treatments using department-approved materials (read verbatim).
  • Witness patient signatures and create/enter orders for diagnostic tests with licensed provider/RN approval.
  • Document appropriately in the electronic health record and charge tickets.
  • Perform receptionist duties as needed (scheduling, phone calls, prior authorizations, patient registration).
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school graduation or equivalent.
  • Current/valid medical assistant certification by an approved certifying board.

Skills

  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology, first aid, aseptic/sterilization techniques, and inventory procedures.
  • Proficiency in Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems.
  • Skill in operating sterilizing equipment and maintaining documentation.
  • Ability to make decisions based on urgency and follow oral/written instructions.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for effective patient/staff communication.
  • Commitment to quality patient care and customer service.

Conditions of Employment

An out-of-state resident hired into this position must establish Illinois residency within 180 calendar days of their start date.
