Medical Assistant, CMC - Crain Unit

Correctional Managed Care addresses the healthcare needs of underserved patient populations within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) and the Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD).

About the role

Provides diversified administrative, clerical, and technical assistance/service, as well as supportive, age-specific, and developmentally appropriate patient care functions for an assigned clinical area within a correctional healthcare facility. Functions include electronic information systems management, medical records processing, delegated medical tasks, and materials inventory/procurement activities. Performs duties in accordance with UTMB CMC and TDCJ standards, policies, procedures, and security considerations.

Responsibilities

• Administrative Functions
  • Operates personal computers to enter and assimilate data, generate reports, draft routine correspondence, and develop special administrative analyses.
  • Performs facility administrative support tasks including filing, mail functions, faxing, and typing correspondence.
  • Executes complex administrative support duties involving independent judgment, general directions, and supervision.
  • Operates data entry systems for entry, tracking, and reporting.
• Medical Record Functions
  • Retrieves and maintains a tracking system for all medical record charts located on the facility.
  • Reviews medical records for completeness and accuracy, and files records and forms upon completion of use.
  • Files medical records and loose-leaf record elements (x-rays, copies, etc.) upon completion of use.
• Materials Management Functions
  • Receives, stores, distributes, and inventories materials including narcotic-based medicines and medical supplies.
  • Maintains proper inventory levels and stock records in a facility supply storeroom or warehouse.
  • Fills requisitions, work orders, and supplies requests; returns expired/unused supplies to vendors for credit.
  • Maintains facility equipment and executes work orders as necessary.
• Medically Delegated Functions
  • Performs tasks delegated by physicians and supervised by RN staff, demonstrating competency in basic clinic tasks outlined in the approved Competency Based Orientation Tool.
  • Assists with patient flow within assigned outpatient clinic setting.
  • Obtains vital signs and accurately collects excretory specimens, such as urine and feces.
  • Obtains blood samples by venipuncture.
  • Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.

Work Environment

• Work is performed in an administrative/clinical office setting within a correctional facility (prison, jail, or juvenile detention center).
• Moderate to extreme physical effort may be required, including walking, standing, performing CPR, and lifting materials, equipment, objects, and/or patients. Occasional lifting may exceed 50 lbs and may be awkward.
• Vision, hearing, talking, and tactile abilities must be adequate for tasks such as reading small print, monitoring equipment, and clear communication.
• Frequent periods of concentrated or focused attention are needed to interpret visual, auditory, and sensory inputs.
• Alertness and attention to detail are required to avoid injury.
• May be exposed to occupational hazards including communicable diseases, radiation, chemotherapeutic agents, and disoriented or combative patients.
• Rotating shifts may be required.
• Security clearance and pre-employment drug testing are required.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Registered Medical Assistant or graduate of an approved Medical Assistant Program.
• BLS-HP certification required.
