Job Summary

The Medical Assistant, Certified functions as an integral member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team in providing direct patient care. The Medical Assistant, Certified performs routine administrative and patient care supportive duties in a Health System medical practice that assist medical and/or nursing staff in the examination and treatment of patients and ensures the clinic/office runs smoothly.

Job Duties And Responsibilities

  • Takes medical histories and records vital signs
  • Explains treatment procedures to patients
  • Prepares patients for examinations and procedures
  • Assists the medical and nursing staff during examination and procedures
  • Collections and prepares laboratory specimens
  • Performs basic laboratory tests in the clinic/office
  • Takes electrocardiograms
  • Removes sutures/staples
  • Changes sterile and non-sterile dressings
  • Promotes patient/family understanding of the educational content and their involvement in the plan of care
  • Documents in the patient record
  • Disposes of contaminated supplies
  • Processes and sterilizes medical instruments
  • Telephones prescriptions to a pharmacy
  • Prepares and administers medications as directed by a physician
  • Authorizes drug refills as directed
  • Greets patients
  • Answers telephones
  • Schedules appointments including arriving appointments in MaestroCare
  • Checkout patients
  • Referral scheduling
  • Arranges for hospital admissions and laboratory services
  • Updates and files patient medical records
  • Fills out insurance forms
  • Handles billing, bookkeeping including receiving copays and collections on account balances
  • Handles correspondence
  • Orders clinical and clerical supplies and forms
  • Maintains communication with Joint Commission and participates in clinic committees as requested

Job Eligibility Requirements

  • Level I -- No experience required
  • Certification by AAMA, AMT, NHA-CCMA, NCMA or ARMA required
  • BLS required
  • Note: 1 year of experience will be provided for an Associate degree in Medical Assisting

Job Hours

The schedule for this position is day shifts, Monday-Friday, with no weekends or holidays.
