Full-time (100%) position, non-exempt, classified as PSS. This is an 11-month per year position.

About the role

Under the supervision of the Clinical Supervisor, the medical assistant provides medical and administrative support to physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, clinical nurses, and licensed vocational nurses at UCSB’s full-service on-campus primary healthcare facility. The role includes assisting with exams, procedures, point-of-care lab testing, patient check-in/out, paperwork, and acting as a medical chaperone. Additional duties include autoclave and laundry tasks, errands, and maintaining a safe, organized clinical environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assists clinicians by greeting patients, taking vital signs, and preparing patients for exams and special procedures.
  • Supports clinicians during exams and procedures, including conducting EKG exams, wound care, dressing changes, orthopedic fittings, ear lavages, audiograms, nebulizer treatments, and spirometry.
  • Responds to emergency situations and distressed patients; participates in Mass Immunization Clinics.
  • Administers oral or injectable medications and immunizations as needed.
  • Serves as a medical chaperone when required.
  • Completes necessary paperwork accurately, obtains medical records, lab, and X-ray results.
  • Restocks supplies, monitors expiration dates, and rotates medications.
  • Performs point-of-care laboratory testing and ensures lab specimen accuracy and timely processing.
  • Maintains cleanliness and safety of clinical areas, including handling patient fluids using universal precautions.
  • Operates and maintains autoclave and Trophon equipment.
  • Handles front office responsibilities, including scheduling appointments, billing, computer input, medical clearance documents, prior authorizations, referrals, and prescription refills.
  • Answers phones, relays messages, and provides information on SHS policies and procedures.
  • Assists with laundry functions and general clinic duties, including errands and cross-departmental support.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Certification from one of the following: American Association of Medical Assistants (AMA), American Medical Technologists (AMT), or California Certifying Board of Medical Assistants (CMAA). Note: Applicants without proper certification will not be considered.
  • Knowledge of clinical policies, medical terminology, electronic medical records, and computer skills.
  • Awareness of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, healthcare teams, and the campus community.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills; ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Problem-solving skills and ability to make sound judgments.
  • Professionalism in accepting constructive criticism and providing suggestions.
  • Adherence to high ethical standards and compliance with work rules and procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1-3 years of experience as a Medical Assistant in a high-volume, fast-paced medical practice.
  • Injection certification.

Special Conditions

  • Must pass a fingerprint background check and credentialing before the start date.
  • Annual influenza vaccination required or must wear a surgical mask in patient care areas during influenza season.
  • Compliance with HIPAA/FERPA regulations; violations may result in disciplinary action.
  • Work hours may include Thursday evenings (10am–7pm).
  • Student Health is closed between Christmas and New Year’s Day.
  • Must meet mandated reporting requirements for Child Abuse.
  • Satisfactory criminal history background check required.
  • UCSB is a Tobacco-Free environment.
  • Final candidate must disclose any prior misconduct findings or appeals within the last seven years.
  • Compliance with UC Vaccination Programs Policy required.

Pay

The budgeted salary range for this position is $28.32/hr. to $33.85/hr. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications, experience, budget, and equitable pay practices. The full salary range for this position is $28.32/hr. to $35.19/hr.

Schedule

Monday–Friday, 7:45am–4:30pm (may include Thursday evenings until 7pm).
