About the role
The Medical Assistant assists in the delivery of patient care as defined by Stony Brook Southampton Hospital nursing philosophy. Under the guidance of the physician, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, RN, or LPN, the Medical Assistant performs nursing functions in accordance with site-specific policies, procedures and established ethics of nursing care.
Responsibilities
- Place patients in exam rooms and take vital signs
- Document findings in the medical chart
- Assist the physician, NP, or PA as directed
- Check and maintain medical equipment daily
- Perform appropriate lab logs and maintain inventories
- Administer EKGs and other in-house testing at the physician’s request and direction
- Perform phlebotomy and prepare specimens for laboratory
- Assist with completion of lab paperwork and tracking
- Schedule patient appointments, transportation, and coordinate referrals
- Assist with grant program eligibility and data entry for grant funding agencies
- Participate in continuous quality improvement
- Perform additional duties as assigned
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Medical assistant certification or experience in outpatient, private physician’s practice or clinical setting
- Demonstrated phlebotomy skills gained through Medical Assistant certification education or Phlebotomy Certification
- Current BLS provider certification from the American Heart Association within 3 months of hire
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- Computer skills (Microsoft Office) and accurate data entry
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills
- Excellent telephone and customer service skills
- Ability to work well with other team members and departments
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, exercise discretion and sound judgment
Preferred Qualifications
- Bilingual English/Spanish
- HIV experience
Pay
$26.56 – $28.52 per hour
