Medical Assistant

About the Role

The Medical Assistant (MA) is a member of the primary care team who provides direct patient care and provider support. The goal is to provide coordinated, patient-centered clinical support related to visit-level care. The MA facilitates planning of office visits through patient and team collaboration, initial rooming of patients, medication reconciliation, risk factor review, health maintenance review, and provider support during visits. The role also includes reviewing the plan of care with patients and assisting with follow-up as needed.

The MA may perform in-office testing and clinic services such as phlebotomy, EKG, hearing and vision testing, preparation and maintenance of exam rooms, upkeep of patient records, and other tasks as requested by medical providers.

Responsibilities

• Perform pre-visit chart scrub (EMR), including reviewing referrals, medications, immunizations, allergies, lab orders, health maintenance due, and preventive care needs.
• Prepare for visits, including procedures, vaccine prep, and foot exams.
• Conduct medication, immunization, and allergy reconciliation.
• Room patients (in-person or remotely for MA II and MA III), including taking vitals, updating medical records, and reconciling care history.
• Prepare, administer, and document medications and vaccines.
• Assist with clinical procedures.
• Review provider recommendations and after-visit summaries (AVS) with patients.
• Communicate with patients via AVS, Q&A, and results through electronic health records.
• Conduct clinical services such as EKG, pulse oximetry, hearing and vision testing, lab specimen collection/processing, spirometry, and venipuncture.
• Schedule patient appointments and coordinate care with appropriate staff (e.g., CHW, PharmD, RNCC, Nutrition) for specialist visits or tests.
• Deliver patient care within HRSA services scope at approved locations, including patient homes, community-based sites, and home-based care, following defined safety protocols.
• Maintain clinic cleanliness and organization, including supply ordering, room stocking, and sterile instrument processing.
• Perform quality assurance tasks, such as running controls and checking expiration dates.

Skills & Qualifications

• Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent written, verbal, telephone, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Experience with client interaction via telephone.
• Knowledge of basic community services.
• Basic typing skills (e.g., 30 WPM).
• Proficiency with personal computers and Microsoft Windows® operating system.
• Experience with Electronic Health Records (EHR); Epic experience is a plus.
