Medical Assistant

About the role

The Medical Assistant performs a wide range of duties in the clinic, primarily assisting in the examination and treatment of patients under the direction of a Physician, Physician Assistant, and/or Family Nurse Practitioner. Responsibilities include greeting patients, updating records, and performing standard care procedures. This position involves direct patient contact and close collaboration with the Care Team, reporting to the Medical Assistant Supervisor.

Responsibilities

• Escorts patients to the exam room and interviews them to obtain medical information, measuring vital signs such as pulse rate, temperature, height, and weight.
• Demonstrates good customer service, empathy, and cultural sensitivity throughout patient encounters.
• Administers patient screeners and adheres to care guidelines (e.g., ACEs, PHQ, Columbia).
• Accurately and promptly records information in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
• Prepares treatment rooms for examinations, ensuring rooms are neat and clean.
• Uploads ultrasounds, patient photos, and screen questionnaires into the EHR.
• Cleans and sterilizes instruments in accordance with department policy and OSHA guidelines.
• Manages in-box tasks sent by providers or care team members for follow-up.
• Arranges and coordinates video visits between providers and patients, troubleshooting technical issues.
• Maintains medication supplies, checks expiration dates, and stocks exam rooms.
• Operates electrocardiograph (EKG) and other equipment to administer routine CLIA-waived diagnostic tests; schedules patients for tests as needed.
• Administers injections or treatments and performs routine laboratory tests.
• Follows policies and procedures, including universal precautions per OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens and Hazardous Materials standards.
• Participates in and adheres to Care Team processes and procedures.
• Upholds MCC’s mission and values in all aspects of job performance.
• Maintains confidentiality in strict accordance with department policy and HIPAA guidelines.
• Attends and participates in required meetings, training, and educational programs.
• Performs administrative duties, including checking eligibility, verifying demographics, assisting with paperwork, and scheduling follow-up appointments.
• Manages provider schedules, patient flow, and provides wait time updates.
• Performs other related work as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Certification from an accredited Medical Assistant educational program.
• Current BLS certification from an accredited organization.
• Completion of an externship program prior to graduation from a Medical Assistant program (desired).
• 0–6 months of Medical Assistant work experience post-graduation (preferred).
• Prior experience working with underserved communities in a community health clinic (highly desirable).

Skills

• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate clearly and courteously with patients and others.
• Strong written and verbal English skills; bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred.
• Knowledge of patient care and examination procedures.
• Understanding of medical practices, administrative processes, and organizational policies.
• Demonstrated computer skills and experience with MS Office.
• Ability to multitask in a fast-paced community clinic environment.
• Strong time management skills and attention to detail.
• Experience with Electronic Health Records (EPIC, OCHIN, NextGen) a plus.
• Ability to work in a team environment.
• Flexibility in schedules and shifts (a plus).

Physical Requirements

• Prolonged standing, walking, and sitting at a desk or computer.
• Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and move medical equipment.
• Fine motor hand movements typical of performing standard medical procedures.
• Able to read charts, graphs, and medical equipment displays.
• Most work performed in-clinic; occasional outdoor work in inclement weather.
• Must fulfill immunization and fit-for-duty regulatory requirements.

Pay

Minimum: $26.00/hour
Maximum: $30.42/hour
