Medical Assistant
Hourly position in Clinical Services, reporting to the Clinical Supervisor or Practice Manager.
About the Role
The Medical Assistant performs clinical duties as defined by state law, including taking medical histories, recording vital signs, explaining treatment procedures to patients, preparing patients for examination, and assisting providers during examinations. Administrative duties may include answering phones, greeting patients, updating and filing medical records, scheduling appointments, and handling billing.
Responsibilities
- Fulfill patient care responsibilities within the MA scope of practice, such as vital signs, procedures, and patient education.
- Assist patients in navigating care to minimize ambiguity.
- Accurately document all aspects of patient encounters.
- Track and document closed-loop communication with patients (e.g., labs, return calls, refills).
- Communicate with internal and external parties to facilitate continuity of care.
- Complete supportive assignments (e.g., performing controls, instrument maintenance, infection control, restocking supplies).
- Provide patient teaching and care plan support.
- Guard patient privacy and comply with HIPAA regulations.
- Actively participate in quality improvement (QI) activities and staff meetings.
- Complete annual competencies within the required timeframe.
- Communicate effectively in English (in person, by phone, and in writing).
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED.
- 1 year of related work experience preferred (or on-the-job training for ≥2 years).
- Certification as MA, RMA, CMA, or CCMA required.
- BLS/CPR certification.
- Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.
