Medical Assistant

About the role

The Medical Assistant (MA) plays a crucial role in providing patient care at the appropriate skill level. They are responsible for operating diagnostic equipment, removing staples from superficial wounds, changing wound dressings, obtaining cultures, administering non-intravenous medications, performing simple specimen collection, collecting blood specimens via venipuncture or capillary methods, performing EKGs, preparing and sterilizing medical equipment using the autoclave, fostering accountability for clinical practice and patient goals, and supporting emergency management protocols.

Responsibilities

• Coordinates clinic work activities and schedules, including traveling to multiple facilities.
• Operates diagnostic equipment (cannot interpret tests).
• Removes staples from superficial wounds, changes wound dressings, and obtains cultures.
• Administers non-intravenous medication and performs simple specimen collection.
• Performs EKGs, X-rays (where applicable), and assists with scribing and case management procedures.
• Performs quality control checks on equipment.
• Prepares and sterilizes medical equipment using the autoclave.
• Fosters accountability for clinical practice and patient goals.
• Records patient care documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
• Identifies and corrects incorrect documentation and alerts clinic leadership.
• Captures patient care as directed by the provider and policies/procedures.
• Respects patient confidentiality at all times.
• Organizes exam and treatment rooms, stocks, cleans rooms, and sterilizes instruments.
• Anticipates provider's needs before patient encounters and assists when necessary.
• Ensures supplies are available, stock is inventoried, logs are accurate, and supplies are rotated.
• Supports and follows standard delegation of orders.
• Supports emergency management protocols and procedures.
• Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Medical Assistant Certificate issued by an accredited institution approved by the State or one year experience working in a health care setting with direct patient contact.
• Licensed to work in Florida if performing duties within their scope of practice delegated by and under the supervision of a physician.
• Knowledge of medical terminology.
• Strong venipuncture knowledge and techniques.
• Data entry abilities and strong computer skills.
• Strong attention to detail.

• Effective written and oral communication skills.
• Teamwork orientation.
• Organized and able to manage competing priorities.
• Expert in computer literacy in electronic health records.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• At least 5 years as a certified medical assistant.
• Preferred certification in AED and CPR.
• Bilingual in English/Spanish.

• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to stand or sit for extended periods.
• Ability to use fine motor skills to operate equipment and machinery.
• Ability to receive and comprehend instructions verbally and/or in writing.

• Occasionally requires exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids.
• Discrimination of shades of color when reading a dipstick.
