About the role
The Medical Assistant (MA) plays a crucial role in providing patient care at the appropriate skill level, ensuring that services meet or exceed industry standards. They are responsible for operating diagnostic equipment, performing various medical procedures, and maintaining a sterile environment.
Responsibilities
- Coordinates clinic work activities and schedules
- Administers clinic and InnovaCare Health policies and procedures
- Operates diagnostic equipment, removes staples, changes wound dressings, obtains cultures, administers non-intravenous medications, performs simple specimen collection, collects blood specimens via venipuncture or capillary, performs EKGs, and performs X-rays (where applicable)
- Assists with scribing and Case Manager procedures
- Performs quality control checks on equipment
- Prepares and sterilizes medical equipment using the autoclave
- Fosters accountability for clinical practice and patient goals
- Records patient care documentation accurately and in a timely manner
- Ensures patient confidentiality and organizes exam and treatment rooms
- Anticipates provider needs and assists with stocking and cleaning rooms
- Supports emergency management protocols and procedures
- Performs all other related duties as assigned
Requirements
- Medical Assistant Certificate issued by an accredited institution approved by the State or one year experience working in a health care setting with direct patient contact
- Licensed to work
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- Strong venipuncture knowledge and techniques
- Data entry abilities and strong computer skills
- Strong attention to detail and effective written and oral communication skills
- Teamwork orientation and organized with the ability to manage competing priorities
- Expert in computer literacy in electronic health records
- Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations
- Basic mathematical skills and safe work practices in a clinic setting
- Able to follow through with delegated tasks
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- At least 5 years as a certified medical assistant
- Bilingual in English/Spanish (preferred but not required)
Skills
- Computer literacy in electronic health records
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and push/pull heavy objects
- Ability to stand or sit for extended periods
- Ability to use fine motor skills to operate equipment and/or machinery
- Ability to receive and comprehend instructions verbally and/or in writing
- Ability to use logical reasoning for problem-solving
- Occasionally exposed to communicable diseases or bodily fluids
- Ability to discriminate shades of color when reading a dipstick
