About the Role
Join our mission-driven team at Fenway Health, an outpatient community health center, as a Medical Assistant. You will provide direct patient care, support medical providers, and assist with administrative functions to ensure high-quality care for our patients.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct patient care using clinical and office procedures appropriate for an outpatient clinic.
- Organize and prepare patient visits, including summary sheets, labels, and huddle sheets.
- Prepare exam rooms, restock supplies, and ensure cleanliness.
- Call patients from the lobby using two patient identifiers and proper pronouns.
- Obtain chief complaint, vital signs, allergies, surveys, screenings, and consent forms.
- Document vital signs in the electronic health record (CPS) and prepare office visit notes.
- Assist with patient care under the direction of medical providers, RNs, or LPNs.
- Coordinate care for individual patients and panels via phone, email, or letters.
- Administer CLIA-waived lab tests (e.g., EKG, Spirometry, UA, HCG, rapid HIV, PPD) and procedures (e.g., ear lavage) per protocol.
- Assist with the collection and transport of lab samples.
- Perform administrative duties such as mailings, filing, faxing, and e-faxing.
- Review patient charts for health screenings due as part of Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) initiatives.
- Maintain standard precautions, use PPE appropriately, and chaperone patients during exams.
- Coordinate in-clinic services to ensure smooth patient flow.
- Demonstrate teamwork and build professional relationships with staff and patients.
- Perform phlebotomy if deemed competent.
- Administer vaccines if eligible by state guidelines.
- Provide clinical support for walk-in patients and assist in emergencies as trained.
- Maintain medical supply stock, medication inventory, and equipment in working order.
- Notify supervisors of broken or needed equipment and remove broken items from service.
- Clean and disinfect exam rooms, supply closets, and equipment daily and after contamination.
- Conduct weekly inventory, restock supplies, and prevent expired stock or shortages.
- Check and record daily refrigerator/freezer and room temperatures; notify supervisor of out-of-range readings.
- Ensure CLIA-waived testing controls are completed monthly and adequately stocked.
- Provide phone and clerical support for patient inquiries and outreach.
- Coordinate and provide reminders for visits, testing, and procedures.
- Document all patient interactions and follow up with providers as needed.
- Respond to team requests and flags in a timely manner.
- Obtain medical record releases (ROI) from patients or legal guardians as appropriate.
- Assist patients with scheduling primary care and specialty appointments.
- Communicate effectively with patients and colleagues across departments.
- Demonstrate competency in CPS, Microsoft Outlook, and other electronic communication tools.
- Participate in daily huddles with assigned providers to review upcoming appointments.
- Identify abnormal vital signs or CLIA test results and notify providers or supervisors immediately.
- Attend mandatory staff and nursing meetings.
- Assist in training other employees in nursing and medical support departments.
- Manage incoming and outgoing faxes via Outlook in a timely manner.
- Adhere to patient confidentiality principles and dispose of protected information securely.
- Inform supervisor of training needs.
Requirements
- Minimum of a High School Diploma or GED.
- Proficiency in written and spoken English.
- Successful completion of a Medical Assistant or EMT Program.
- Current CPR Certification.
- Ability to work as a team member.
- Professional appearance, demeanor, and deportment suitable for a healthcare setting.
- Understanding of basic medical terminology.
- Demonstrated ability to work respectfully and effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and life experiences.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA).
- Experience working with ethnically, culturally, racially, and gender-diverse staff and patients.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
- Typical office environment with lighting, temperature, and structure suitable for a community health center.
- Ability to work long hours (up to 12 hours) as required.
- Exposure to loud noise, strong odors, and emotionally labile individuals.
- Moderate physical activity, including handling objects up to 15-20 pounds, assisting mobility-impaired patients, and standing/walking for most of the day.
- Occasional lifting of weights greater than 20 pounds (requires assistance).
- Potential exposure to body fluids, tissues, and pathogens; requires safety training and use of protective equipment.
- Work environment may involve exposure to hazardous materials and situations.
- Location of work and duties may change based on clinic needs.
