Crystal Coast Pain Management in New Bern, NC is seeking a full-time Medical Assistant to assist team members and patients in providing quality care. The clinic uses a multi-modal approach to treat pain at the source, helping patients build a better quality of life through innovative techniques and procedures. Medical Assistants support clinicians in fulfilling treatment plans.
Job summary
The Medical Assistant is a vital role to the pain clinic, utilizing both clinical and administrative tasks to help clinicians. Daily responsibilities include checking-in patients, conducting prior authorizations, and documenting medical information into the electronic medical records (EMR) system.
Clinical duties
- Verifies patient information by interviewing patient, recording medical history, and confirming purpose of visit
- Obtains full set of vital signs including BP, pulse, weight, height, and pain scale
- Prepares patients for examination by provider and assists provider as needed
- Collects and prepares laboratory specimens such as urine drug screens (UDS) and oral swabs
- Collaborates with other clinical staff to review UDS reports for inconsistencies and report to provider
- Prepares and administers medications as directed by providers, which may include IM injections
- Handles prescription refills, checks CSR, processes medication prior authorizations, sends refills to provider for e-scribing, and instructs patients about medications
- Performs pill disposal
- Removes sutures, performs spinal cord stimulator (SCS) trial lead removal, and changes dressings
- Manages referrals and authorizations for PT, obtains authorizations for MRI and CT imaging, schedules imaging, and calls patients with scheduling information and pre-procedure prep
- Explains pre-procedure and post-procedure instructions to patients
- Keeps exam rooms stocked, cleaned, and organized
- Assists other team members as needed when time available
- Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor
- Conducts themselves in a professional and pleasant manner at all times in all interactions with patients, staff, vendors, and others

Education and experience
- High school diploma
- Minimum of 1-year medical assisting experience
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- Proficiency with EMRs

- Strong ability to multitask and move from one project to another as needed
- Works to resolve problems or determines an appropriate course of action in a timely manner
- Strong time management, follow-through, and organizational skills
Work environment
Work performed in an office environment. Involves frequent contact with physicians, leadership, and medical office staff. Physical activity can be irregular and fast-paced, regularly.
