About the role

The Department of Family Medicine at Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University seeks an outstanding Medical Assistant to join their team. The position assists Physicians and Nurses with patient care including triage and stocking supplies. It also involves preparing patients for provider visits and assisting with procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Triage incoming patients by obtaining vital signs, following standing triage orders, reconciling medication lists, allergies, ensuring immunizations are up-to-date, and preparing patients for visits.
  • Aid physicians with examinations, minor surgeries, diagnostic procedures, and treatments.
  • Provide basic patient care and education as directed by the provider and standing orders.
  • Complete delegated tasks such as patient messages, prescription refills, lab results, referrals, home health agency requests, medication prior authorizations, patient forms, and physician follow-ups.
  • Address tasks and interventions in the electronic health record before the close of each business day.
  • Coordinate services with specialists and assist supervisors in training new staff members.
  • Assist in filling in for other clinical staff during vacations and illnesses and perform other duties as assigned.
  • Maintain inventory of medical and office supplies, clean, sterilize, and maintain used instrumentation according to department protocol.
  • Respond to patient inquiries promptly and professionally, documenting all communications in the electronic medical record.
  • Participate in staff meetings, education lectures, and quality improvement activities.
  • Provide positive and responsive customer service to internal and external users, reflecting Old Dominion University's mission and values.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with colleagues through courteous, constructive, and professional interaction.
  • Listen to and anticipate customer needs, provide clear explanations, respond quickly, and take initiative to assist.
  • Show empathy and understanding for patients and colleagues.

Requirements

  • Certification as a Medical Assistant such as RMA or CMA is required.
  • Completion of BLS training and recertification every 2 years.
  • Successful completion of a Medical Assistant program.

Qualifications

  • Previous medical office experience with relevant skills preferred.
  • Customer service-oriented individual required.
  • Experience in a “fast-paced” ambulatory setting desirable but not required.
  • Detail-oriented, self-motivated, and possesses excellent time management and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Problem-solving abilities.
  • Empathy and understanding for patients and colleagues.
