About the role
The Department of Medicine at Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University is seeking an outstanding Medical Assistant to join the team.
Responsibilities
- Affords assistance to physicians, APPs, and nursing staff with patient care including patient triage, referral orders, retrieving imaging and lab results, processing work tasks, messages in the EHR and patient portal, assisting other clinical staff with daily clinical and administrative tasks, and stocking/preparing exam rooms.
- Prepares patients for provider visits and assists providers with procedures.
- Reviews list of patients coming in for next day’s appointments and obtains any missing clinical information prior to the visit.
- Manages additional support staff within the division, responsible for staff scheduling, coverage, and phone triage, assisting in calling patients & pharmacies to relay prescription, advice or instructions for the providers.
- Takes vital signs such as height, weight, temperature and blood pressure, records in electronic health record.
- Chaperones and assists providers and nurses for in-office procedures/exams.
- Maintains clean, well-equipped examination rooms, cleans and sterilizes, stocks examination rooms and triage area with medical inventory and submits reorder requests to office manager.
- Checks EMR tasks, responds to patient messages and addresses prescription refills, prior-authorization requests, and questions for providers/APPs.
- Performs injections.
- Conducts departmental employee respirator fit testing and coordinates with Environmental Services.
- Checks-in and checks-out patients if needed, obtains and scans intake paperwork.
- Anticipates needs, problems, critical issues and opportunities as they arise and advises nursing supervisor accordingly.
- Performs other duties as assigned by clinical nurse supervisor or Director of Nursing.
Requirements
- Successful completion of a Medical assistant program (or equivalent military training) and certification (CMA, CCMA, or RMA) is required or ability to obtain certification within the first 90-days of employment.
- Must complete a Basic Life Support (BLS) class and re-certify every 2 years.
- Customer service-oriented individual is required.
- Must have some working knowledge of EMR documentation.
