Medical Assistant
Join a multi-disciplinary team at the Blackburn Center to deliver comprehensive, person-centered, integrated services to the Portland Eastside community. The Medical Assistant (MA) plays a critical role in patient care, supporting providers and patients throughout visits and serving as an integral member of the patient care team. This role floats between Blackburn and Evergreen Crossing locations, bringing Central City Concern’s signature health care, housing, and employment services together under one roof.
About the Role
The MA provides patient-centered care, collaborates closely with providers and clinical staff, and works with coordinators, front desk, and non-clinical staff to ensure smooth clinic flow and a positive patient experience. Blackburn Center offers primary care, mental health support, addiction and substance use disorder treatment, an on-site pharmacy, employment resources, and housing for over 100 residents, most of whom are in recovery.
Locations: Blackburn Center (12121 E. Burnside St. Portland, OR 97216) and Evergreen Crossing (8225 NE Wasco St. Portland, OR 97220).
Schedule
- Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday: 7:30 AM – 5:00 PM
- Wednesday: 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM
- Saturday and Sunday: Off
Pay
- Non-certified: $25.05 – $33.24 per hour
- Certified: $28.77 – $38.18 per hour
Final compensation will be determined based on relevant experience, education, credentials/licensure, and internal equity. External candidates: Offer maximum is $29.07 per hour (non-certified) and $33.39 per hour (certified) per the Union contract.
Responsibilities
- Work as a member of the Blackburn Center multi-disciplinary team to deliver comprehensive, client-centered, and trauma-informed integrated services.
- Actively participate in service integration and identify opportunities to improve collaboration within care teams while following information-sharing guidelines.
- Proactively identify workflow and logistics improvements; review and contribute to continuous improvement plans.
- Support culturally responsive and specific services for diverse clients.
- Manage patient flow, including:
- Pre-visit huddle preparation, including chart review for immunizations, screenings, chronic conditions, and mental health issues.
- Patient preparation per standard workflow, such as:
- Collecting, documenting, and reporting vital signs.
- Completing preventive screening questions and medication reconciliation.
- Stocking and setting up exam rooms pre- and post-visit.
- Completing and documenting provider orders.
- Assisting with medical referrals and scheduling.
- Administer injectable medications per provider order with appropriate documentation.
- Maintain medical/lab equipment and records in compliance with state and federal regulations.
- Clean and stock supply rooms, exam rooms, and workstations.
- Handle patient telephone calls per protocols.
- Participate in patient outreach to encourage engagement in care.
- Complete and document procedures per provider orders and clinic standards.
- Contact pharmacies for new prescriptions and refills.
- Maintain a clean, safe clinic environment within scope of practice.
- Observe clients providing urine drug samples, secure samples via chain of custody, and document results.
- Complete care team duties as delegated by the Clinical Services Manager.
- Attend mandatory trainings and adhere to privacy regulations (HIPAA, 42 CFR Part 2) and CCC policies.
- Report breaches of protected health information immediately.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School diploma or GED.
- Minimum of one (1) year of recent, verifiable medical assistant experience in a healthcare setting.
- Current driver’s license, access to a vehicle, and compliance with CCC’s Fleet Safety policy (including driver training and recertification).
- Minimum $100,000/$300,000 personal auto liability insurance coverage.
- Must meet CCC privileging requirements as required by FTCA.
- Current BLS certification prior to start.
- Ability to read labels, distinguish colors, and perform physical tasks (walking, bending, lifting, climbing stairs) with reasonable accommodation.
- Pass pre-employment drug screen, TB test, and background check (including DHS clearance).
- Adherence to CCC’s non-discrimination policies and ability to interact respectfully with diverse individuals.
Qualifications
For Certified Medical Assistants: Completion of a Certificate-level Medical Assistant program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Educational Programs (CAAHEP), such as AAMA or NCCT.
Preferred: Bilingual skills and experience working with underserved populations, particularly people without stable housing.
