Medical Assistant
About the role
The Medical Assistant provides both administrative and clinical support to the clinics. This position requires a highly organized individual who can safely manage multiple tasks simultaneously and move efficiently through varied responsibilities. The Medical Assistant must work independently as well as part of a team, demonstrating respect and consideration for fellow staff members. Flexibility is essential, including the ability to provide coverage for clerical staff when needed. Certain duties may vary based on office location and department structure.
Responsibilities
- Perform administrative tasks such as answering incoming phone calls, addressing patient requests, and scheduling appointments.
- Contact patients who miss appointments and reschedule as needed.
- Distribute patient records to medical staff and prepare new patient charts.
- Ensure all medical information is accurate and available for review by proper personnel.
- Process outgoing patient referrals and check out/discharge patients, collecting necessary copayments.
- Maintain a well-stocked and organized work area.
- Schedule patient appointments and medical procedures (e.g., x-rays, diagnostic testing) using the EMR system.
- Obtain surgical and diagnostic insurance authorizations.
- Prepare examination rooms, ensuring necessary supplies are available and rooms are cleaned and stocked.
- Clean examination rooms, including disposing of table paper and gowns, sanitizing contaminated surfaces (e.g., door handles, blood pressure cuffs, chairs), and restocking supplies.
- Greet patients promptly and courteously, escorting them to the lab or examination room.
- Assist patients with placing personal belongings in the exam room and ensure any medications brought by the patient are documented in their chart.
- Verify patient history prior to physician visits.
- Obtain and record patient vital signs (weight, blood pressure, respiration, pulse) in the EMR.
- Record the patient’s room number on the encounter ticket and place it in the door or chart holder.
- Assist physicians with office procedures as a second pair of hands (does not include administering medications).
- Collaborate with RNs and LPNs to provide high-quality patient care.
- Clean and sterilize medical equipment and dispose of contaminated supplies.
- Maintain working knowledge of OSHA compliance standards and apply these policies to daily responsibilities.
- Complete all required training and in-services, including annual OSHA training and PPD placements, in a timely manner.
- Maintain a high level of patient confidentiality.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
- Cross-train as a Patient Service Representative (PSR).
Requirements
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Medical Assistant degree from an accredited vocational institution or community college course in Medical Assisting.
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience.
- Phlebotomy certification preferred.

Pay
Hourly range: $17.45 - $20.50 (varies based on experience level, education, and geographical location).
