About the role
A podiatry medical assistant is one who specializes in ankle and foot care. They keep the medical office running efficiently and handle various tasks.
Responsibilities
- Prepares patients for examination by taking vitals; recording medical history into Epic
- Escorting patients to and from exam rooms
- Complying with OSHA and HIPPA regulations
- Scheduling surgeries by making arrangements with the surgical centers; verifying times with patients; preparing charts, pre-admission and consent forms
- Helping the physician with procedures
- Giving patients injections as directed by the physician
- Casting for Orthotics
- Applying Below knee cast
- Applying Low Dying strapping to feet
- Applying Unna Boots
- Performing Nail Debridement
- Performing Callus/Corn debridement
- Dressing changes
- Performing X-Rays
- Documenting phone calls
- Returning Patient Messages; Completing In-Baskets
- Updating Logs
Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent required
- At least one (1) year of experience preferred
- Medical Assistant Certification is preferred
- Epic experience is preferred
Physical Demands
- Communicate professionally and courteously with patients and clinic staff
- Sit for at least an hour at a time
- Stand and walk for up to 20 minutes at a time
- Assist with rooming patients, filing, and other basic office tasks to include keeping office environment and waiting room clean
- The ability to bend, stoop, and lift up to 5-10 lbs
- The ability to utilize the computer and keyboard for long periods of time
Work Requirements
- Sit, stand, bend, reach and squat
- Frequent computer usage including the ability to type as well as verbally communicate with patients and co-workers
- Lift up to 30 lbs occasionally
- Assist patients in and out of the patient chair with support with other staff members
Inventory
- Unpack daily deliveries of medical products and supplies from UPS/FedEx in large boxes
- Unpack boxes weighing over 50 pounds and maneuver them to appropriate supply cabinets
Orthotics
- Retrieve and assemble materials for casting, including large basins of warmed water for plaster application
- Reach overhead or under counter to access storage shelves for pre-fabricated inserts
X-rays
- Aid in positioning patients for x-rays by kneeling or stooping
- Insert and remove a 10-pound digital radiograph system cassette sensor
Patient Transfer
- Assist patients on and off treatment chairs, assist in moving limbs, remove and replace shoes and boots
- Prepare patients for physician exam by sitting on the floor to remove shoes and socks or perform nail debridements while leaning, stooping or sitting on the ground
Casting
- Hold a limb in position for casting and/or bandage application
- Remove elongated or fungal toenail material with manual instrumentation and motorized grinders
- Apply soft materials or fiberglass to a limb that can weigh in excess of 50 pounds
Instrument Processing
- Collect and rinse instruments in a universal basin
- Clean, package and sterilize instruments on a counter sterilizer
Procedures
- Pass medications, cut sutures, perform saline flushes, retrieve specimens, etc.
- Assist with procedures lasting between 5-20 minutes
Medications
- Reach over head into and out of a lockable overhead cabinet to retrieve medications
- Draw and deliver medications to treatment rooms
Record Keeping
- Take and record vitals and pertinent medical history
- Assemble blood pressure cuffs to perform the read
General Office Cleaning
- Wipe down chairs and counters with sanitizer after each patient visit
- Remove trash from rooms and replace new bags
- Collect and transport large trash bags to an on-site dumpster
