Job Description
Aid physicians with medical procedures in the office setting. Duties include phlebotomy, laboratory testing, quality control, instrument troubleshooting, and maintenance. Key responsibilities involve ensuring proper quality control before patient testing, performing blood work, drawing blood, following laboratory procedures, maintaining logs and records, preparing slides, and documenting all activities.
- Perform quality control procedures before patient testing.
- Conduct laboratory blood work.
- Carry out blood draws.
- Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing.
- Execute technical laboratory procedures with accuracy and precision.
- Prepare blood or bone marrow slides for evaluation.
- Send lab results to appropriate facilities based on patient's insurance plan.
- Keep test report logs, quality control logs, equipment records, and checklists up-to-date.
- Maintain patient I.D. policy and procedure during each encounter.
- Take vital signs, measure height and weight, assess pain levels, and conduct PHQ9 depression screenings.
- Document all testing and treatment in the patient's medical record.
- Create encounter forms for charging patients and document all steps in the EMR for electronic superbills.
- Show physicians critical blood counts and prepare scans and CDs for review.
- Manage inventory and place orders as needed.
- Tackle instrument malfunctions and contact service companies as necessary.
- Perform EKG tests when required.
- Ensure compliance with state and federal regulatory agencies.
- Participate in compliance testing and complete required CEUs annually.
- Maintain laboratory cleanliness and adhere to safety guidelines.
- Comply with all relevant laws and regulations regarding patient care, rights, safety, billing, and collections.
- Adhere to AON and departmental policies and procedures, including IT policies and the Disaster Recovery Plan.
- Preserve confidentiality of patient information.
- Train new employees on related job duties.
- Work at multiple AON locations as needed.
- Occasionally work overtime as required.
Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- BLS certification required.
- Valid driver's license and vehicle for travel to other clinic locations.
- One year of experience as a medical assistant in a clinic or physician's office, capable of performing venipuncture.
- Education and certifications as required by the state where employed.
- Analysis & Critical Thinking: Solid problem-solving, analysis, decision-making, planning, time management, and organizational skills.
- Interpersonal Effectiveness: Developed interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, diplomacy, tact, conflict management, delegation, and diversity awareness.
- Communication Skills: Good command of the English language, with proficiency in MS Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, and proficiency in EMR.
- Customer Service & Organizational Awareness: Strong customer focus, ability to build a quality culture, and effective collaboration and partnerships.
- Self-Management: Effective time management, stress management, self-motivation, self-starter, and ability to work independently with limited supervision.
- Computer Skills: Proficiency in MS Office applications and EMR.
- Travel: Less than 25%.
- Standard Core Workdays/Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM.
