Medical Assistant
About the role
This Medical Assistant role focuses on providing high-quality clinical and administrative support in a busy urgent care setting. You will work closely with physicians and nurse practitioners to prepare patients for exams and procedures, accurately document medical information in the electronic health record, and help ensure a clean, organized, and safe environment. This position offers the opportunity to gain experience across different specialties and grow within the organization, with potential for overtime.
Responsibilities
- Perform and accurately document vital signs for patients.
- Prepare patients and examination rooms for exams and procedures, ensuring all necessary equipment and supplies are available.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
- Provide essential patient care assistance to support daily clinical activities, including greeting patients, taking vital signs, and preparing examination rooms.
- Absorb and relay instructions from the physician or nurse practitioner to the patient or an authorized person in a clear and professional manner.
- Collect patient data in person and by phone, documenting patient concerns and relevant information accurately.
- Record messages and care provided in the electronic medical record for physician or nurse practitioner review.
- Take complete and accurate messages, route messages to the appropriate area, and support order and referral entry in the electronic medical record system.
- Set up cases in the electronic medical record system and perform basic registration, including updating patient demographics.
- Accurately document medical information and clinical encounters in patient records using the electronic health record.
- Track and route test results to physicians and nurse practitioners for timely review.
- Communicate test results to patients when authorized and deemed appropriate by the physician or nurse practitioner.
- Facilitate patient care activities, including scheduling ancillary tests and reinforcing patient education as directed by the physician or nurse practitioner.
- Perform basic triage activities as appropriate and in accordance with site operations and clinical direction.
- Maintain adequate inventory of medical, office, and pharmaceutical supplies, and restock as needed.
- Use basic computer skills to work proficiently with the electronic health record during daily documentation and patient care communications.
- Process orders appropriately in the electronic medical record and support efficient patient flow throughout the clinic.
Essential Skills
- At least 1 year of experience as a Medical Assistant.
- Proficiency in obtaining and documenting vital signs.
- Experience preparing patients and rooms for examinations and procedures.
- Ability to assist physicians with procedures, including documenting medical history and case notes.
- Strong skills in documenting medical information accurately in electronic health records (EHR/EMR).
- Experience collecting patient data in person and by phone and documenting patient concerns clearly.
- Experience using electronic health record systems for message taking, routing, order entry, referrals, and case setup.
- Competence in tracking, routing, and communicating test results under clinician direction.
- Basic triage skills as directed by physicians or nurse practitioners.
- Ability to maintain a clean, organized, and safe clinical environment.
- Strong communication skills to relay instructions from clinicians to patients or authorized individuals.
- Basic computer skills and comfort working with EMR/EHR systems in a fast-paced clinical environment.
- Experience providing direct patient care in an urgent care, clinic, or similar medical setting.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) credential is beneficial.
- Experience with phlebotomy is an advantage.
- Background in urgent care or high-volume outpatient settings is preferred.
- Familiarity with scheduling ancillary tests and reinforcing patient education.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize in a busy clinical environment.
- Interest in working across different specialties and taking on overtime when available.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in documentation and message routing.
- Comfort working with electronic medical records and other digital health tools.
Work Environment
This role is based in a busy urgent care setting that typically serves 50–100 patients per day. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with flexibility to work until 6:00 p.m. as needed and opportunities for overtime in different specialties. You will work closely with physicians, nurse practitioners, and other clinical staff, using electronic health record systems and standard medical equipment to support patient care. The environment is fast-paced and patient-focused, requiring consistent attention to cleanliness, organization, and safety throughout the facility.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Middletown, NY.
Pay And Benefits
The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $21.00/hr.
