Medical Assistant-Apprentice

About the role

Medical Assistant (MA) Apprentices provide direct patient care, practicing up to the skills learned and approved through the Apprenticeship program guidelines. Under the supervision of an MA-C Coach, Apprentices assist with routine or general clinical responsibilities that contribute directly and indirectly to patient care. The Apprentice is expected to complete 2,000 hours of clinical practice (under guidance), unpaid coursework, 3 unpaid skills labs, and all required apprenticeship activities. Successful completion of the program and the national MA-C certification test, along with remaining an employee in good standing, qualifies Apprentices for entry into the regular MA-C job classification.

This is a full-time position working day shift Monday-Friday (with occasional weekends). The intended start date for this role is 10/12/2026.

Responsibilities

• Shadows Medical Assistant - Certified coach per Washington Association of Community Health (WACH).
• Completes WACH InReach coursework and follows all program requirements.
• Greets patients, escorts them to exam rooms, and informs them of delays.
• Prepares patients for provider and anticipates provider needs to maintain efficient patient flow.
• Performs phlebotomy and laboratory procedures as directed.
• Performs and documents patient care tasks.
• Ensures exam rooms are clean, stocked, and ready for use.
• Cleans, prepares, and sterilizes medical instruments and equipment.
• Assists providers with procedures, exams, and patient education.
• Manages prescription refills under provider direction and authorization.
• Handles appropriate patient referrals and required documentation.
• Observes and follows safety protocols, including handling sharps, PPE, blood-borne pathogens, and general safety.
• Answers telephones, schedules patients, and supports the care team.
• Ensures no injuries to self or others by following safe work practices and policies (e.g., security, SDS, infection control, fire, disaster, safe lifting).
• Complies with organization policies, procedures, and labor agreements.
• Maintains courteous and efficient interactions with team members and support groups.
• Conducts self professionally and ensures personal appearance meets organizational standards.
• Handles additional accountabilities as required by management.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• Previous experience is not required.
• Ability to provide proof of 7 hours of HIV/AIDS training from a WA State Department of Health-approved provider within 3 weeks of hire.
• Proficiency in computer programs and equipment used in clinic settings.
• Basic math and effective reasoning skills for clinical applications.
• Critical thinking skills: seeks resources for direction, performs independent problem-solving, and makes logical decisions.
• Demonstrates accountability, safe judgment, and practices within legal/ethical guidelines.
• Current Healthcare Provider (HCP) level CPR certification or ability to complete within two months of hire.
• Ability to receive constructive feedback professionally and use it for growth.
• Maintains and submits documentation for Apprenticeship requirements in a timely manner.

Physical Requirements

• Frequent prolonged standing/walking.
• Occasional lifting, reaching, kneeling, bending, stooping, pushing, and pulling.
• Occasional heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs.).
• Maneuvering and/or transferring patients.
• Manual dexterity and mobility.
• Ability to read and understand patient charts, provider orders, and test results.
• Ability to communicate verbally and/or in writing for accurate information exchange with healthcare professionals, patients, families, and the public.

Schedule

Full-time, day shift Monday-Friday (with occasional weekends).
