Medical Assistant Apprentice
About the Role
Improve the overall health of the communities we serve by learning to manage patient care at an assigned medical clinic through an apprenticeship program. This role allows you to make an impact on patients' lives and contribute to providing trustworthy, patient-centered, and attentive care to anyone who walks through our doors.
Responsibilities
- Shadow a CHAS Health Medical Assistant – Certified coach.
- Complete educational coursework and follow all program requirements.
- Participate in classroom training as required.
- Greet patients and escort them to exam rooms; inform patients of time delays during their visit.
- Prepare patients for the provider; anticipate provider needs to maintain efficient patient flow.
- Perform phlebotomy and laboratory procedures as directed by the provider.
- Perform and document immunizations.
- Ensure exam rooms are clean, stocked, and ready for patients.
- Clean, prepare, and sterilize instruments.
- Assist the provider with procedures, exams, and patient education.
- Assist with prescription refills under the direction and authorization of the provider.
- Manage appropriate patient referrals and required documentation.
- Observe and follow required safety protocols, including handling and disposal of sharps, use of personal protective equipment, exposure to bloodborne pathogens, and general safety of employees and patients.
- Answer telephones, schedule patients, and support care team members.
- Perform other duties as assigned, including supporting the CHAS Health Mission and Core Values.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Enrollment in the CHAS Health Registered Medical Assistant Apprenticeship required.
- Aged 18 years or older by the start of the apprenticeship program.
Skills

- Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced work environment and anticipate future needs.
- Basic computer user skills.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and accurate spelling ability.
- BLS (CPR/AED) certification required.
- Commitment to supporting a safe and respectful environment.
Physical Demands
- Ability to move around the facility between one-third and two-thirds of the day, as well as sit at a workstation and in patient rooms.
- Use of hands over two-thirds of the day; reaching with arms less than one-third of the day.
- Communicating required over two-thirds of the day.
- Minimal climbing, stooping, or crawling.
- Lifting up to 10 lbs. about half the time; lifting up to and above 25 lbs. occasionally.

Pay
Compensation range: $20.38 - $29.06 per hour.
