Medical Assistant - Ames
As a Medical Assistant at PHC, you will support the delivery of healthcare by providing clinical care and administrative support as delegated by licensed clinical staff. You will work in accordance with standards and scope established by PHC policies and procedures, with special consideration for patient safety and infection control.
About the role
You will work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to welcome patients to a safe and inclusive environment and engage them in holistic care. This position is based at Story County Clinic in Ames, with occasional floating to clinics in Ames or Marshalltown. Mileage reimbursement and out-of-town bonus may apply.
Schedule
- 40 hours per week, Monday–Friday, 8 AM–5 PM
- Saturday rotation at PHC Marshalltown Clinic (9 AM–1 PM) approximately once every six weeks
- $5.00 per hour shift differential for 3-hour shifts on Saturdays or after 5 PM on weekdays
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Patient Care Team to provide healthcare in a clinic setting
- Perform assigned workflows efficiently and effectively
- Prepare for exams/procedures and assist providers as requested
- Facilitate patient rooming and intake, obtaining accurate vital signs
- Document patient care accurately and timely in the electronic health record
- Complete prior authorizations, referrals, and service orders per guidelines
- Perform point-of-care testing per CLIA guidelines
- Administer medications, immunizations, and treatments per written or standing orders
- Provide age-appropriate patient education
- Complete and document quality controls per established processes
- Pre-clean and transport contaminated instruments per infection control policies
- Monitor and restock exam room supplies, removing expired items
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- One year of experience in a medical assistant, patient care technician, certified nurse assistant, phlebotomy, or related clinical role or completion of a medical assisting program from an accredited institution
- Excellent customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to collaborate in a team-based care environment
- Strong organizational, priority, and problem-solving skills
- Professional demeanor with empathy and composure in all situations
- Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office and electronic health records
Licenses & Certifications
- Current Basic Life Support for HealthCare Providers (must obtain within Introductory Period if not current)
- Current Mandatory Reporter certification approved for the State of Iowa (must obtain within Introductory Period if not current)
Preferred Qualifications
- Effective medical assistant skills with universal precautions
- Work experience in a community health center or medical clinic
- Bilingual in Spanish (verbal and written)
- Phlebotomy skills
Pay
The typical hiring range for this position is $18.65–$23.32 per hour. Candidates with extensive related experience may be considered for additional compensation up to the pay range maximum.
