About the Role
This position performs foundational clinical duties under direction while developing proficiency in clinic workflows, service line expectations, and electronic medical record (EMR) processes. The role focuses on accuracy, consistency, and safe patient care, embodying Character First qualities such as attentiveness, cautiousness, compassion, dependability, and initiative.
Responsibilities
- Complete clinical intake requirements, including measuring and recording patient-specific information (height, weight, respiration, pulse, blood pressure, temperature, pulse oximetry, and head circumference) and documenting accurately in the EMR.
- Administer immunizations under provider direction, provide Vaccine Information Statements (VIS), update OSIIS, and document accurately in the EMR.
- Collect patient specimens (e.g., throat and nasal swabs) following established protocols.
- Follow clinical policies, procedures, and standards to support patient safety, accuracy, and efficient clinic flow.
- Utilize the EMR to complete assigned tasks accurately and timely.
- Use standard medical/psychiatric terminology and medication references as required.
- Demonstrate attention to detail to ensure accurate documentation, specimen handling, and task completion.
- Communicate effectively with patients, providers, and team members using appropriate written, verbal, and non-verbal communication.
- Accept feedback and incorporate coaching to improve performance and consistency.
- Manage assigned tasks using basic time-management and prioritization skills.
- Identify patient concerns or issues and escalate appropriately.
- Demonstrate respectful, patient-centered interactions that value patient perspectives.
- May be required to float within the clinic to maintain business continuity.
- For psychiatric specialty clinics:
- Serve as a liaison with rural clinic staff to support clinic-to-clinic visits.
- Assist in troubleshooting pharmacy and EPIC/eVist scheduling concerns.
- Ensure all screening tools and paperwork are completed timely.
- Administer long-acting injections.
- Support Variety Care’s accreditation as a Patient Centered Medical Home and commitment to provide care that is Safe, Effective, Patient Centered, Timely, Efficient, and Equitable.
- Provide leadership and work with all staff to achieve the goals of the “Quintuple Aim” of healthcare reform: improving care experience, health outcomes, and decreasing healthcare costs.
- Embody personal character, displaying high moral and ethical conduct, integrity, adaptability, and sound judgment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Demonstrated proficiency of core competencies within 90 days of employment, including:
- Foundational clinical skills
- Accurate and timely documentation
- Reliability in assigned workflows
- Openness to coaching and feedback
- Commitment to continued skill development
- Must complete and pass CPR course within 90 days of employment.
- Possess intermediate computer skills, including data entry and typing.
- Knowledge of instrumentation used in lab point-of-care testing, as directed, within 90 days.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of information in accordance with HIPAA and Variety Care policy.
- Ability to effectively communicate with the patient population.
- Ability to work in a multi-faceted, fast-paced work environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Medical Assistant Certificate preferred; demonstrated proficiency in foundational clinical competencies may be considered in lieu of certification.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) – speak, write, and comprehend.
- Previous clinic or primary practice/behavioral health experience.
Essential Functions
- Able to lift at least 25 pounds.
- Able to assist patients onto and off exam table when asked or directed.
