About the Role

The Medical Assistant (MA) 2 will perform multi-skilled tasks to assist medical providers, supporting patients’ healthcare management and clinical procedures in a culturally competent manner. The role involves providing hands-on care while adhering to regulatory requirements, standards of care, and institutional policies under the direct supervision of a licensed physician. The MA 2 works within the philosophy, mission, vision, and values of the Department of Nursing and the University of Miami, ensuring a compassionate and healing environment.

Responsibilities

• Provide overall care with kindness and compassion, using creative approaches to support patient needs and respecting spiritual beliefs.
• Establish trusting relationships by creating a conducive climate for healing, managing discomforts, and providing emotional support.
• Prioritize and integrate multiple requests, performing tasks promptly, safely, and professionally.
• Communicate clearly and timely with patients, families, and clinical team members.
• Participate in unit/clinic programs and meetings, contributing to team building and positive morale.
• Utilize technology for communication, documentation, and accessing clinical information.
• Attain and maintain educational knowledge and competencies reflecting current clinical practice.
• Ensure compliance with State and Federal regulatory guidelines, including HIPAA.
• Meet diverse communication needs of patients with Limited English Proficiency (LEP).
• Perform within clinical scope of practice, incorporating protocols and standards of care.
• Prepare treatment exam rooms with proper supplies, instruments, and materials.
• Understand and apply medical and surgical asepsis principles.
• Prepare patients for examinations with basic instruction and information.
• Perform routine laboratory tests, vital signs, EKGs, and phlebotomy; document in patient records.
• Observe and report changes in patient signs, symptoms, or visual alterations.
• Administer medication safely as directed by the physician (except in hospital-based units).
• Assist in patient care activities such as walking, escorting, and transporting patients.
• Clean and sterilize medical instruments while observing sterile technique principles.
• Schedule patient tests and complete required laboratory forms.
• Provide patients with care instructions and information from providers.
• Maintain accurate and complete patient records and documentation.
• Order, stock, and inventory supplies; assist with clerical duties.
• Adhere to University and unit-level policies and procedures.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Medical Assistant certificate of completion from an accredited program or institute.
• Credentialed Medical Assistant certification from a recognized accrediting or certifying body (e.g., CMA, RMA, CCMA, NCMA, NRCMA). If not obtained at hire, certification must be completed within 12 months.
• American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) for healthcare providers.
• Florida HIV/AIDS Healthcare Professional Continuing Education (CE) Certificate.
• Minimum of 2 years of healthcare experience.
