About the role
Reports to the Health & Wellness Director.
Responsibilities
- Follow the facility’s policies and procedures governing the administering of medications to residents.
- Note and report errors in the administration of medications.
- Assist in developing and implementing procedures or programs to determine when, where, and why medication errors occur and how they can be prevented.
- Complete necessary forms, charts, reports, and submit these as required.
- Maintain a productive working relationship with nursing staff, attending physicians, the Medical Director, and pharmacists.
- Report any complaints or grievances made by residents to the Health & Wellness Director.
- Participate in facility surveys requested by the Executive Director or Health & Wellness Director.
- Participate in Quality Assurance programs, the Pharmaceutical Services Committee, and other facility committees that improve medication pass accuracy.
- Accurately and safely prepare, administer, and document oral and/or topical medications ordered by the resident’s Primary Care Provider.
- Verify that medications brought into the facility by newly admitted residents are examined and identified by the attending physician or facility pharmacy.
- Follow facility policies for destroying medications under the direction of the facility pharmacist or Health & Wellness Director, including documentation requirements.
- Follow facility labeling policies and ensure all administered medications are properly labeled.
- Follow facility procedures for charting medications.
- Assist in documenting and removing medications discontinued by the attending physician.
- Follow facility procedures for drug receipt errors, including notifying the delivery source and the Health & Wellness Director.
- Ensure documentation of drug receipt errors includes a written error report signed by an observer/witness and you.
- Follow facility procedures for holding medications for residents who are transferred or when medications are discontinued.
- Observe and verify that medication is ingested or applied as directed.
- Document any instance where prescribed medication is not administered, including reason(s) for refusal.
- Promptly notify the Health & Wellness Director of any medication errors or adverse reactions.
- Verify resident identity before administering medication.
- Accurately measure, record, and report residents’ vital signs.
- Follow facility procedures allowing residents to self-administer medications.
- Be familiar with common medical abbreviations, symbols, and terms used in medication administration.
- Attend continuing education programs to maintain certification and stay current in the field.
- Agree not to disclose residents’ protected health information and report suspected violations.
- Report any known or suspected unauthorized attempts to access facility information systems.
- Perform all tasks in accordance with established policies, procedures, and supervisor instructions.
- Follow work assignments and schedules to complete assigned tasks.
- Cooperate with interdepartmental and facility personnel to maintain nursing services and meet residents’ needs.
- Maintain confidentiality of all resident care information, including protected health information.
- Report known or suspected unauthorized disclosure of resident information.
Qualifications
- Minimum: high school education or equivalent.
Language Skills
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations.
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to present information and respond to questions from managers and employees.
Mathematical Skills
- Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Reasoning Ability
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations with limited standardization.
- Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
- Must be a licensed Medication Aide who has completed a state-approved training program and any required examinations per state law.
Physical Demands
- Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
- Prolonged use of desktop or laptop computer.
- Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, and talk; read or hear.
- Frequent use of office equipment including copier/scanner/fax, telephone, and calculator.
- May assist in evacuating residents during emergencies.

- Noise level is usually low to moderate.

Pay
$17.50–$24.50 per hour depending on experience and education. Additional compensation may include shift differentials, standby/on-call, overtime, premiums, extra shift incentives, or bonus opportunities.
