Essential Duties
- Follow the policies and procedures of the facility governing the administering of medications to residents.
- Note and report errors in the administration of medications.
- Absorb and implement procedures or programs aimed at identifying medication errors, their causes, and preventive measures.
- Perform administrative tasks like completing necessary forms, charts, reports, etc., and submit these as required.
- Maintain a friendly, productive relationship with other members of Health Services, attending physicians, the Health Services Director, and pharmacists.
- Report any complaints or grievances made by residents to the Health Services Director.
- Participate and cooperate with facility surveys (inspections) made by authorized government agencies as requested.
- Engage in Quality Assurance programs, the Pharmaceutical Services Committee, and other relevant facility committees or programs.
- Accurately and safely prepare, administer, and document oral and topical medications.
- Verify the identification and examination of medications brought into the facility by newly admitted residents.
- Follow facility policies and procedures regarding the destruction of medications.
- Ensure all medications administered are properly labeled.
- Document and remove discontinued medications accurately and according to facility procedures.
- Notify the Health Services Director of any errors or adverse reactions to medications.
- Observe and verify that medication is ingested or applied as directed.
- Measure, record, and report vital signs of residents.
- Allow residents to self-administer medications if permitted by facility policy.
- Be familiar with common medical abbreviations, symbols, and terms related to medication administration.
- Attend and participate in continuing education programs to stay updated on professional developments.
- Agree not to disclose resident's protected health information and promptly report any violations.
- Follow work assignments and schedules to complete assigned tasks.
- Collaborate with inter-departmental personnel and other facility personnel to ensure adequate nursing services.
- Maintain confidentiality of all resident care information, including protected health information.
- Report any known or suspected unauthorized attempts to access facility's information system.
Qualifications
- High school education or equivalent.
- Licensed Medication Aide with successful completion of a state-approved training program and any necessary examinations.
Physical Demands
- Sit, stand, walk, and talk frequently.
- Frequent use of a desktop or laptop computer.
- Prolonged use of office-related equipment such as copier/scanner/fax, telephone, and calculator.
- Frequent assistance in evacuating residents during emergency situations.
Work Environment
- The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
