About the Role

Areas of Responsibility:

  • Maintains the standards of nursing care and implements the policies and procedures of the hospital and nursing department.
  • Assures each patient on the unit has a comprehensive, individualized care plan.
  • Ensures ongoing evaluation of each patient's physical and psychosocial needs with appropriate initiation of nursing care and/or intervention.
  • Works collaboratively with the healthcare team to provide evidence-based nursing care for optimal patient outcomes.
  • Ensures accurate shift sign-off and hand-off communication among staff.
  • Facilitates communication of patient status to nursing staff, physicians, ancillary staff, and nursing administrators through verbal reports and EMR documentation.
  • Maintains clinical competency in Medical Surgical patient care and ensures staff competency.
  • Coordinates with the Education Specialist to provide necessary education and training for staff.
  • Develops educational goals and competencies for staff in collaboration with the Chief Nursing Officer.
  • Reviews and revises departmental policies and procedures annually to maintain quality.
  • Coordinates and plans orientation for new, travel, and agency staff, evaluating their readiness for independent functioning.
  • Creates staff schedules and revises staffing patterns to comply with established criteria and ensure safe patient care.
  • Stays current with new developments in nursing through continuing education and mandatory in-services.
  • Assists with procurement of equipment and supplies, including research and evaluation of new equipment.
  • Participates in preventive maintenance and proper use of equipment in collaboration with BioMed and Materials departments.
  • Maintains good rapport with fellow workers and physicians, performing duties in a pleasant manner.
  • Collaborates actively to improve unit and organizational outcomes.

Responsibilities

Nursing Standards of Practice

  • Works with the Education Specialist to assess and document department competencies.
  • Facilitates staff development, education, and training opportunities.
  • Leads regularly scheduled staff meetings and educational sessions.
  • Ensures documentation meets standards and reflects quality care.
  • Supports staff in coordinating patient care with ancillary departments and appropriate patient/family education.
  • Oversees admission, transfer, and discharge of patients in the assigned department.
  • Supports staff in managing intravenous fluids, blood and blood products, and medications with proper documentation.
  • Ensures documentation of significant changes in patient condition, reactions to medications, treatments, and variances.
  • Supports staff in contacting physicians regarding changes in patient condition as necessary.
  • Supports staff in ordering, preparing, administering, and recording medications and treatments accurately.
  • Evaluates work performance of staff members and addresses substandard performance in a timely manner.
  • Supports staff in ensuring each patient achieves optimal clinical outcomes.
  • Performs monthly rounding on all staff members and daily leader rounding on patients.
  • Able to perform nursing duties, including charge nurse duties and assisting with patient care as needed.

Collaboration/Quality

  • Supports staff in collaborating with the interdisciplinary team to coordinate care from admission to post-discharge.
  • Works cooperatively with the Chief Nursing Officer, Nursing Managers, and Ancillary Department Managers to ensure safe processes for patient care.
  • Promotes and follows facility policies and procedures, including Infection Control, Safety, Quality Assurance, and Facility and Physician Standing Orders.
  • Participates in Medical Staff, C.Q.I. meetings, and other committees as assigned, reporting findings to comply with guidelines.
  • Adheres to Patient Bill of Rights and hospital policies relating to privacy, confidentiality, and respect.
  • Ensures compliance with rules and regulations of the Minnesota Department of Health and the Department of Health and Human Services.
  • Works with other departments to ensure continuity of patient care.
  • Develops annual goals, benchmarks, and action plans with the Chief Nursing Officer.
  • Assists in creating the departmental budget, fiscal management, and strategic planning.
  • Establishes positive working relationships with other healthcare facilities and care collaboration entities.

Hip & Knee Replacement, Shoulder Surgery, and Spine Surgery Program

  • Ensures department meets all DNV Hip and Knee Replacement, Shoulder, and Spine Certification Requirements, including communication to staff.
  • Implements and monitors care delivery models for HKRP, Shoulder, and Spine programs, including case management and patient safety systems.
  • Reports required audit data, CQI, and DNV non-conformities to the HKRP, Shoulder, and Spine Steering Committee and Quality Committee.
  • Coordinates with the Education Specialist to provide required education for staff caring for patients with arthritis, injuries, fractures, osteoporosis, and those undergoing joint replacement, shoulder, or spine surgery.
  • Ensures ongoing evaluation of staff competency and knowledge as required by DNV certification.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing.
  • Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse by the State of Minnesota Board of Nursing.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.
  • Previous experience in Med Surg nursing required.
  • Sincere interest in nursing with knowledge in Med Surg nursing.
  • Understanding of the physical, psychosocial, and emotional needs of patients and families.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to develop rapport and work cooperatively with all members of the healthcare team.
  • Recognizes and serves customers (patients, staff, facility, and administration) to achieve positive outcomes.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications required.
  • Complete a TNCC course within eighteen months of hire.
  • Added to RQI within the first 3 months of employment to maintain required certifications.

Physical Demands

  • Continual ability to be mobile, talk/hear in person and on the phone, and have vision for close-up work and color vision.
  • Frequent walking, turning/pivoting, grasping, pushing/pulling, keyboarding, and repetitive hand movements.
  • Occasional sitting, stationary standing, stooping, twisting, reaching overhead, pinching, and lifting/carrying.
  • Lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling 30 pounds and over is an essential, non-repetitive function of this position.

Pay

Base pay range: $106,412.80 - $157,684.80 per year.
