The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) Student works under the supervision of certified laboratory personnel while completing clinical rotations. This role provides hands-on laboratory experience and assists with pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical laboratory processes in accordance with hospital policies, regulatory standards, and patient safety guidelines. The MLT Student is expected to function within the scope of training and competency validation. Reports to: Laboratory Director/Laboratory Manager.
What you will do in this role
- Assists laboratory staff with specimen collection, processing, and preparation for testing.
- Performs waived and moderate complexity testing as allowed by policy, competency validation, and regulatory requirements.
- Accurately labels, handles, and transports specimens following established procedures.
- Maintains laboratory equipment and work areas in a clean and organized manner.
- Assists with quality control, inventory management, and supply stocking.
- Follows all safety, infection prevention, and HIPAA confidentiality standards.
- Documents testing and laboratory activities accurately in the laboratory information system.
- Communicate professionally with laboratory staff, nursing personnel, physicians, and patients.
- Demonstrates willingness to learn and accepts coaching and feedback from laboratory leadership and clinical instructors.
- Adheres to all hospital, laboratory, and educational program policies and procedures.
- Participates in department training, huddles, and educational opportunities as assigned.
