Medical Lab Tech PRN
About the role
Conducts all expected tests and analytical procedures efficiently and accurately according to hospital procedures, performance standards, and competency standards.
Participates in proficiency testing, adhering to federal and state regulations as well as hospital policies.
Performs post-analytical activities including reporting results and providing technical and support information for all age groups.
Provides resolution to customer service issues within guidelines and support education for clinical staff as appropriate or requested.
Participates in laboratory and hospital performance improvement activities, including evaluating new equipment and procedures.
Adheres to all applicable local, state, and federal regulations, protecting patient information confidentiality.
Follows safety policies, including the use of PPE, handwashing, and hazardous chemical handling, and demonstrates understanding of the Chemical Hygiene plan and Infection Control policies.
Transports hazardous waste from the point of generation to a designated secure storage area, completing initial and refresher training for proper handling and disposal.
Aids in new employee training and orientation.
Answers the telephone and performs clerical and receptionist duties to support department operations.
Maintains workspaces in a neat, organized, and properly supplied manner, storing and safeguarding documentation and paperwork.
Performs pre-analytical activities including equipment maintenance, function checks, inventory control, specimen collection, biological specimen processing, cleaning and disinfection, quality control, and calibration.
Responsibilities

- Technical skills and aptitudes related to the laboratory testing, procedures, and processes performed in the department or work area assigned
- Follows and ensures adherence of staff to the Corporate Compliance Plan and to all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state, and federal agencies and accrediting bodies; protects the confidentiality of patient information and results at all times
- Ability to work independently and adapt to varying priorities, including directing workflow with minimal supervision
- Ability to maintain equipment/records and perform quality assessment activities
- Ability to operate computer systems to maintain patient documentation, testing records, and other related documents
- Ability to educate and train new staff in medical laboratory settings
- Ability to communicate appropriately and effectively with patients and their family, hospital staff, nurses, physicians, and other health care professionals
- Must be able to read, write, and speak conversational English
- Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Ability and willingness to work flexible schedules, including nights, weekends, holidays, etc., and adapt to change
- Excellent customer service skills, with the ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing
- Strong analytical, organizational, and people skills, with mathematical, computer, reasoning, and language skills at the college level
- Familiarity with a broad range of laboratory equipment including but not limited to computers, telephone, fax, copier, printers, chemistry analyzers, hematology analyzers, coagulation analyzers, urinalysis analyzers, blood bank and microbiology analyzers, glucometers, incubators, environmental hoods, monitored refrigerators and freezers, centrifuges, phlebotomy chairs, and supplies
Qualifications
- Associate degree in a laboratory science (chemical or biological science) or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution, OR if the field of study does not match, candidate must meet the CLIA equivalency listed in additional information
- An equivalent combination of education and/or relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of the stated degree requirement
- Equivalent laboratory training and experience meeting the requirements defined in CLIA regulation 42CFR493.1489(b)(3)(ii)
