Mechanical Stress & Structural Analyst 3

About the role

Designs and analyzes mechanical systems, equipment, and packaging with a primary focus on stress and structural analysis for structures, systems, and components used in DOE and commercial nuclear power plants. Conducts feasibility studies and testing on new and modified designs, directs support personnel in detailed design and prototype fabrication, and prepares calculations and reports. Utilizes computer-aided engineering (CAE) and hand calculations to perform fatigue, static and dynamic/nonlinear structural, fracture analyses, and thermal (steady state and transient) and seismic loadings. Experience with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Perform mechanical stress, structural, and computational fluid dynamic analyses using ANSYS (proficiency required) and other FEA tools such as NASTRAN/FEMAP (familiarity a plus).
• Write and review reports, white papers, calculations, and analyses per ASME NQA-1 quality program rigor.
• Research and analyze customer design proposals, specifications, and manuals to determine design feasibility.
• Design pressure vessels, heat exchangers, and piping systems per ASME III Division 1, 3 & 5, ASME VIII Division 1 & 2, ASME B31.1, and ASME B31.3.
• Utilize ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code “Design by Analysis” and “Design by Rule” techniques.
• Design and analyze pressure vessels using COMPRESS.
• Perform piping design and analysis per ASME III, ASME B31.1, and ASME B31.3 using AutoPipe.
• Support the design and engineering of thermal fluid systems, including pressure drop, line sizing, valve sizing, pump, and compressor calculations.
• Support HVAC system design, including heat and cooling load sizing, fan, and duct sizing calculations.
• Use SolidWorks and SolidWorks Simulation proficiently; experience with CREO is a plus.
• Apply systems engineering per INCOSE, DOD 5000, or ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288.
• Write Design Basis Documents (DBDs) and System Design Descriptions (SDDs).
• Prepare proposals, develop estimates, and create Basis of Estimates (BOEs).
• Provide technical leadership to lower-level engineers, including training, planning, and directing work.
• Function as a project engineer, systems engineer, or lead engineer overseeing multidisciplinary engineering teams.
• Availability for evenings and weekends to meet goals and deadlines.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in a related field from a four-year college or university and a minimum of 5 years of directly related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Proficiency in ANSYS and SolidWorks is required.
• Experience with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is a plus.
• Familiarity or experience with ASME III Div. 1, ASME III Div. 5, ASME VIII Div. 1 & 2, AISC, or ASCE design codes and standards used in commercial or government nuclear power or fuel processing plants is a strong plus.
• Experience designing systems and equipment for DOE and commercial nuclear markets, including Advanced Reactor, Small Modular Reactor (Generation III, III+, and Generation IV), fusion reactors, and nuclear fuel processing.
• U.S. citizenship with the ability to attain/maintain a government security clearance.
• Ability to travel domestically and internationally approximately 10%.
• Basic knowledge of ISO and/or AS9100.
• Working knowledge of Lean Manufacturing/6 Sigma/Kaizen.
• Working knowledge of ASME NQA-1 is a strong plus.
• Active Licensed Professional Engineer, ASME VIII Certifying Engineer, and/or Section III, Appendix XXIII Certifying Engineer are pluses.
