About the Role
You will supervise and provide technical direction to a team of designers as the lead designer. Responsibilities include delivering mechanical and piping deliverables and services on time, within budget, and meeting quality expectations. This role requires extensive progressive experience in mechanical and piping design and involves project controls for cost, schedule, and quality. Work will be performed in our Pasadena office with minimal supervision.
Responsibilities
- Utilize department design and drafting standards.
- Recognize and communicate project scope, specifications, and design criteria.
- Identify and communicate scope and design changes promptly.
- Provide on-site assistance during startup.
- Offer technical guidance to less experienced drafting personnel.
- Coordinate work activities with other staff members and the discipline lead.
- Produce mechanical and piping installation specifications with engineering review and approval.
- Understand the skills and experience required for design functions.
- Proactively lead and coordinate design staff to achieve scope, schedule, and budget objectives.
- Mentor subordinates.
- Participate in squad checks to ensure coordination between design disciplines.
- Check calculations made by other designers for accuracy and conformance to codes and specifications.
- Determine construction quantities and provide construction cost estimates.
- Delegate work to designers based on their technical skills and experience, and follow up for support.
- Consult with design leaders from other disciplines to ensure efficient progress and quality.
- Participate in planning training programs and professional development opportunities for staff.
Requirements
- Associate degree in Engineering Technology or Computer-Aided Drafting (required).
- SPED (Society of Piping Engineers and Designers) Certification (preferred).
- 15+ years of relevant industrial experience in mechanical/piping drafting and design.
Skills
- Knowledge and application of piping materials and supports.
- Design of moderately complex process and utility piping systems.
- Flexibility analysis of piping systems.
- Manual valve sizing, use, and application.
- Good design practices for sizing all piping systems, including compressible fluid piping.
- Identification, application, and specification of steam traps, liquid drainers, and safety valves.
- Selection of piping specialty items based on design criteria.
- Drafting of P&IDs and GA’s.
- Design of piping for specific equipment and inline instrumentation (e.g., pump suctions/discharges, tanks, control valve stations).
- Familiarity with specifications and installation details of construction bulk materials and equipment.
- Ability to create accurate mechanical/piping installation documents from vendor equipment drawings.
- Understanding of workflow/information flow between disciplines and schedule constraints.
- Ability to estimate task completion accurately.
- Development of mechanical/piping installation specifications, construction cost estimates, engineering schedules, and man-hour budgets.
- Knowledge and application of company engineering design and CAD drafting standards.
- Leadership of small teams to deliver on commitments.
- Proficiency in 2D AutoCAD and MicroStation.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Effective presentation and virtual team skills.
