Mechanical Lab Technician

About the Role

This position is responsible for all phases and aspects of mechanical testing. The role may also assist with work in other areas of the laboratory as needed and supports main laboratory testing activities and day-to-day operations under the direction of the Shift Supervisor, Group Leader, Lab Supervisor, and Lab Engineer.

Responsibilities

  • Perform sample preparation for mechanical and chemistry samples.
  • Maintain and calibrate various testing equipment daily.
  • Enter test results into the AS400 system.
  • Maintain hard copy records of calibration and test results.
  • Perform sample preparation in the metallography lab, including grinding and polishing.
  • Conduct grain, corrosion, and bend testing with result evaluation.
  • Train other technicians for backup purposes.
  • Document testing procedures and results, storing them in the proper locations.
  • Utilize the sample archive and logging system.
  • Perform special work order testing for Quality Control and other departments.
  • Participate in continuous improvement programs.
  • Train in new testing procedures or other labs as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalency is required.
  • Ability to multi-task and pay strong attention to detail is preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to learn, adapt, and retain information.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, and use hands for technical tasks.
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Visual ability with or without correction.
  • Communication abilities.

Health and Safety

  • Work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations.
  • Follow Company safety rules and report any defects or absence of protective equipment to the Supervisor or Manager immediately.
  • Use or wear required protective equipment, including:
    • Safety shoes
    • Safety glasses
    • Hearing protection
    • Hard hat
    • Respirators (requires being clean-shaven to comply with policies and OSHA regulations)
    • Fire-retardant clothing
    • Acid PPE
  • Report any contravention of safety regulations or Company policy to the Safety Coordinator, Group Lead, or Supervisor.
  • Follow all Lockout-Tagout (LOTO) guidelines for designated machines.
  • Follow all Environmental Policies and Regulations.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area.

Work Environment

  • Work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations.
  • Clean, well-ventilated, and safe work areas.
