Mechanical Inspector

This is inspection work in enforcement of municipal codes and ordinances pertaining to hydronic heating and cooling systems, boilers, air ventilation, air conditioning, heating and cooling systems, and pressurized vessels. Work includes inspecting installations to ensure compliance with approved plans and the City Mechanical Code, as well as inspecting water piping, radiators, fuel storage tanks, fire lines, fire sprinkler systems, air compression systems, and fuel and exhaust systems of standby power generators.

Responsibilities

• Inspect new, replacement, and retrofit installations, including heating, cooling, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, as well as associated pipes, radiators, valves, refrigeration, furnaces, air handling units, fans, ductwork, coils, boilers, pressure vessels, fire lines, fire sprinkler systems, fire suppression systems, flammable liquid storage tanks, pressurized gas storage facilities, air compression systems, and standby power system fuel and exhaust systems for compliance with codes and ordinances.
• Check that persons operating inspected equipment are properly licensed and assist in administering tests to engineers and operators to ensure qualification.
• Verify that persons installing mechanical systems are properly licensed.
• Write reports on work performed and maintain records of structures inspected.
• Review building plans to ensure code compliance and suggest changes as needed.
• Maintain regular job attendance in accordance with a schedule established by the supervisor.
• Perform other related duties as assigned or as the situation dictates within the scope of this classification.

Requirements

The knowledge, skills, and abilities may be acquired through, but are not limited to, the following combination of education and/or experience:

• High school diploma or its equivalent AND one of the following:
  • Seven (7) years of experience as a journeyman-level steam/pipe fitter in the installation and layout of boilers, pressure vessels, hydronic, refrigeration, and process piping systems.
  • Seven (7) years of experience as a journeyman-level installer in the installation and layout of air distribution, ventilation, and conditioning systems.
  • Seven (7) years of experience as a first-grade stationary engineer in the operation of boilers and pressure vessels.

Qualifications

• Must possess, and have held for a minimum of five years, a valid City of Omaha-issued first-grade stationary engineer’s license, or a journeyman-level steam/pipefitter’s license, or a journeyman-level ACAD license.
• Must be able to transport oneself or coordinate transportation to work sites throughout the City during the workday.
• Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and blueprints quickly and accurately and compare them with work in progress.
• Ability to detect code violations and appraise the quality of materials and construction.
• Ability to understand written or oral instructions.
• Ability to adhere to safety policies, procedures, and guidelines.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and members of the general public.
• Physical ability to sit, stand, or walk from 51% to 75% of the time and to climb, reach, balance, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, crawl, push, pull, and lift up to 25% of the time.
• Ability to use up to twenty (20) pounds of force to move objects up to 33% of the time, up to ten (10) pounds of force 34% to 66% of the time, and lesser amounts of force 67% to 100% of the time.

Skills

• Knowledge of steam and pipe fitting installation and repair materials and procedures.
• Knowledge of the construction and maintenance of boilers and other pressure vessels.
• Knowledge of codes and ordinances regulating the installation and operation of boilers, pressure vessels, hydronic heating and cooling systems, flammable liquid storage tanks, compressed gas storage, fuels, and exhaust systems.
• Knowledge of safety standards pertaining to the installation of boilers, pressure vessels, hydronic systems, flammable liquid storage tanks, and compressed gas storage tanks.
• Knowledge of warm air heating, ventilation, and air conditioning installation materials and practices.
• Knowledge of city codes governing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning installation and repair.
• Ability to operate a computer or other technology using standard or customized software applications.
• Ability to learn and adapt to advances in computer and electronics device technology and software.

Pay

$29.80 hourly with step increases to $38.03.
