Mechanical Engineering Intern - Nuclear (Summer 2027)

About the role

Target start date: summer 2027. As a Mechanical Engineering Intern, you will be assigned to a project team and assist engineering team members in executing project work, which may involve the design of new systems or modifications/upgrades to existing power plant or industrial facility systems and components. Working under senior engineers, you will have the opportunity to apply and expand your mechanical engineering background. This role is part of Sargent & Lundy's Nuclear Power Group, which focuses on clean, carbon-free energy, including small modular reactors, advanced reactor technology, and nuclear plant life‑extension and digital modernization projects.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the preparation of engineering calculations, drawings, and specifications.
• Work on a variety of tasks associated with project reporting, such as tracking and evaluating project activities, project progress, and related data.

Qualifications

• Active enrollment in a Bachelor’s or Master’s of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, General Engineering, or Systems Engineering.
• Strong academic background with coursework in mechanical systems analysis, including thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and/or heat transfer.
• Proficiency with MS Office applications.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Skills

• Valued but not required: understanding of the practical application of mechanical engineering principles.
• Valued but not required: enrollment in an ABET‑accredited engineering program.
