Mechanical Engineer III

About the Role

Merrick and Company is seeking a Mechanical Engineer / Designer to support the mechanical design, construction administration, and commissioning of projects as part of a multi-disciplinary team. This position is located at our client facility in Manhattan, Kansas (not a Merrick office). Merrick is an internationally recognized firm with a 60+ year history of design excellence, serving clients worldwide. The role requires adaptability for short- and long-term projects in an environment blending creativity and high technical skills.

Successful candidates must be self-starting, motivated, innovative, articulate, self-disciplined, and confident in a demanding, fast-paced setting.

Responsibilities

• Participate as part of the mechanical engineering and multi-disciplinary project team to execute detailed mechanical, plumbing/process, and controls engineering support for complex mechanical life science facilities.
• Perform detailed engineering calculations, assessments, and decision-making.
• Generate design reports, field reports, statements of work, and work orders.
• Develop specifications and system/equipment requirements.
• Support production of construction drawings and modeling.
• Engage in on-site construction administration activities, including site inspections, testing, and commissioning of equipment and facilities. This may include travel within the United States and abroad.
• Utilize excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with clients and team members.
• Develop and maintain expert-level knowledge of applicable codes and standards for biocontainment facility design and construction in the U.S. and internationally.
• Develop and maintain proficiency in required software packages.
• Adhere to Merrick and project-specific Quality Assurance procedures.
• Exercise independent judgment and initiative to complete engineering, construction administration, and site support tasks.
• Work independently and in a team environment based at the client site in Manhattan, Kansas. Future opportunities may include hybrid work arrangements (office, remote, and onsite).

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
• Minimum of eight (8) years of related experience in mechanical building system engineering and construction administration for government, academic, and private clients.
• Demonstrated experience in HVAC, plumbing/process, fire protection, and controls design.
• On-site experience supporting construction administration activities.
• Proficiency in report writing, including design reports, specifications, field reports, statements of work, and work orders.
• Strong problem-solving skills applying mechanical design principles.
• Proficiency in design software to support construction administration phase activities.
• U.S. citizenship and residency in the United States for the past five years.
• Ability to obtain federal government security clearance.
• Possession of a current passport and ability to travel, including potential international travel.

Qualifications (Preferred)

• Licensure as a Professional Engineer in Kansas, Georgia, Colorado, or another U.S. jurisdiction. If not currently licensed, must demonstrate a plan and ability to obtain licensure within two years.
• Experience in laboratory design and construction.
• Experience in commissioning high-containment laboratories, high-tech, or mission-critical facilities.
• Experience with HVAC controls systems and protocols (e.g., JCI, Siemens, ALC, BACnet, Modbus).

Physical Requirements

• Ability to sit for extended periods at a computer workstation.
• Work at jobsites, including active construction and commissioning efforts, with access to elevated areas, functional/operational equipment, and required PPE.
• Air travel and business trips within Canada, the continental U.S., and potential overseas work.
