Mechanical Engineer III - Actuation
About the role
Crane Aerospace & Electronics supplies critical systems and components to the aerospace and defense markets, with products in engines, landing gear, satellites, medical implants, missiles, and unmanned aerial systems. Every 1.2 seconds, a product from the Burbank facility stops an aircraft, delivering passengers and military personnel safely. The Mechanical Engineer II/III will work on New Product Development, responsible for the design and analysis of mechanical and hydraulic components primarily used in aircraft brake control systems. This role serves as the primary technical point of contact for hydro‑mechanical products on assigned projects, developing, designing, and modifying components to defined requirements, preparing documentation to define products and verify analytics, and providing technical assistance to internal departments, suppliers, and customers. A strong actuation background is sought.
Responsibilities
- Create new products and modify existing products to support customer, regulatory, industry standard, and market requirements.
- Perform stress and fatigue analysis on assigned hydraulic and mechanical components and assemblies.
- Optimize design solutions based on analysis performed.
- Create or calculate tolerance stack‑ups; perform reliability and Failure Modes and Effects analyses.
- Lead new product design projects from requirements definition through concept, detailed design, manufacturing, to a qualified product.
- Perform trade studies to optimize design solutions.
- Manage suppliers to produce specification‑compliant products within budget and on time.
- Prepare, review, and approve documentation required to define and control products.
- Support design reviews with external customers and internal stakeholders as required.
- Monitor testing and analyze data to verify product performance to customer and design specifications; review and approve test procedures and reports.

- Experience designing major aircraft actuation and distribution components and/or systems, such as hydraulic valves, actuators, and electromechanical devices.
- Thorough knowledge of ANSI Y14.5 standards, tolerance analysis, and computer‑aided 3D design.
- Fundamental engineering analyses including fluid dynamics, mechanical design for hydraulic components, systems, and pressure vessels.
- Working knowledge of practical manufacturing techniques, quality assurance requirements, and factors affecting product/program costs.
- Knowledge of analytical tools such as SolidWorks and its analysis suite is preferred.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to organize, prepare, and present materials to customers, suppliers, and company management at all levels.
